If you take any artistic proffesion seriously , be it film, graphic design, or music it's simply ridiculous to consider anything but a mac.
We're talking 64-bit G5 processors running a Unix OS. That means it's stable as can be, and never crashes or freezes while you work. I've owned one for more then 2 years now without a single crash, freeze, or missing "DLL" ( they don't use dll files btw ). All the best professional software works with mac or is mac only ( including the adobe line, the final cut pro line, the soundtrack/garageband line ). There's no viruses for macs, I never worry about opening mysterious .exe attachments in emails. They're super fast, long lasting, and you can fix virtually any problem you have yourself. Unless you're buying a computer to play video games, which I'll admit PC's would be your better choice because most game titles are for PC, otherwise there's honestly no alternative. |

I'm not a Mac person, but I'm a Unix person.
I'm assuming you can use a command-line, no? # man fdisk Play around there. Should have all you need. If you wanna do something semi-graphical # cfdisk (HFS supported there? Mac g33ks?) You just doing some file partition somewhere that way? If so, this is hella easy. Otherwise, if you're overhauling your root partition, then you're gonna need to re-install the OS and that requires more work. Once you format your partition, if it's not the root part and you just need to mount it: # mount -t hfs <devicefile> /wherever/the/fuck/you/wanna/mount/it It's _really_ simple. |

Reformat Hard Drive while: 1) Create a big main UFS partition and a smaller HFS+ for whatever program that needs it. 2) Format the whole thing as HFS+. When reformatting you should consult the manual that came with OS X. You will have to boot off the OS X CD, use disk utility to wipe it clean and format as HFS+, then reinstall OS X. |

This is why I'm not super crazy for protools.
It's so damn picky. I mean, the program itself is great, but setting it up can be such a big stupid hassle that it seems kind of less worth it Digidesign comes across as the arrogant animal trainer guy on set who freaks on you if you so much as bat an eyelash at one of his animals, cos it disrupts them. Protools doesn't support dual processors, or raid arrays (on PCs at least)... that seems kinda wrong. |

HA the apple cult!
no doubt rytalin, i bought a copy of mac addict the other day and the way they write about these computers is very very cult like. its just a really, really slick OS. Plus PT and reason run like a freakin dream on it. all is not lost though as i still use my pc for the net, e-mail , and all the work i do with sonic foundrys stuff. the mac is for music only |
