burner
my burners fucked up.
hasnt worked in years but hadnt questioned it till lately, it always errored during burning/or maybe timed out i dunno so i dropped all the settings to as slow as possible. now it will "write" throught the whole cd and finish but then i try to play the cd and theres nothing there. happened with both an audio cd and a data cd. anyone know wut tha problem may be/ how i can fix it should i take this in to a shop[ or sumthin? |

yea just go to www.atic.ca
like stingbeans said you can get a really decent one for $50. I mean your only really burning simple stuff anyways. Even an old burner burning at 8x will have ur cd done in no more then 10 mins. Recently i saw one at atic for $39 and it was decent |

yeah its true, ive heard atic having really bad return policies and customer support
i suggest www.a-power.com .. im actually planning on buying a computer off them in the near future |

ok heres a problem
i have a compaq, using a compaq is much like tending to a half-retarded aunt silvia i guess compaqs arent compatible with any other PC products, ie all(?) hardware must be specially made by compaq or some shit i dunno if this relates to my cdrom/burner but i had quite a problem getting new RAM no thanks to the idiot-morons at london drugs [side note if you work at london drugs let me know so i can smack you with bad karma] regular PC RAM doesnt work in compaq presarios, you need special compaq RAM so im hopin one of you got taken by this sorry ass company too so that you can be my compaq-guru wut you guys think would a cdrom/burner likely have to be made by those compaq bastards// im no comp maestro but im leaning towards yes ebbomega im waiting on your words of wisdom oh wise one anyone else take a stab at it but if ebbo proves you wrong the rivers will run red with my fury of bad karma as i ride a wave of hate upon you |

I got a free Presario P90. It's fantastic for one purpose: Firewall. But I never really have any intent on adding any hardware to it except for a PCI Network card. Now, unless they soldered your shit together, you shouldn't have much problems putting in a new drive. A CD drive is a CD drive is a CD Drive. However, if you do end up with issues, I highly recommend you wipe your harddrive and use a real install of Windows (IE Don't use the recovery disk), and you should be alright. If it _is_ soldered (That would be rather interesting) then my main recommendation is to buy a new computer. Or rather, but new parts and build your own. See what stuff you can salvage out of your old comp (Is video/ethernet onboard? If not, you don't need to buy those. Nothing harsh soldered in? It's reuseable!). What I'd mainly recommend you getting new stuff of: Mobo Processor Case That should be it. In my experience, even your RAM is reusable (unless it's PC100 or something like that, in which case you're much better off just getting a Mobo with DDR and buying yourself a 512 stick or two). Good luck. |

Also, another place to check:

and the problem is I WILL NOT wipe my harddrive. all my music is on here and i would gladly stand aside and let a virus repeatedly rape my computer before i erased it Quote:
i dont see getting a new computer anytime soon but when i do it sure as hell aint gon be no compaq DONT BUY COMPAQS ethernet yes/ vid card maybe... theres no trace of one but i can still watch videos (quality is shitty) so i guess theres some bunk default shit piece in there. the RAM is some special shit that we had to go back to london drugs three times over just to get it right (think its called DIMM memory) think im gon try an buy a new burner aint down wit buying shit over the net tho i lose interest with their specs and their little pictures/ i want to hold the meat//shake it a bit |

The sites we're giving you correspond to local computer shops. What I'd heartily recommend though is just walking into one with friendly commission salespeople with no intent to buy anything. Then when they tell you everything you need to know, tell them you'll be back, get the commission salesperson's name, then go find a better price elsewhere. Once you know the specs you're looking for, shopping around over the net/pricefinding is a breeze.
A burner is a burner is a burner, honestly. Like I say. Just grab an LG. It doesn't really matter what kind. The speeds are all universal. Anything beyond that is just bells & whistles. Soldering is when you get a hot thing (called an iron) and permanently place it in its place by melting metal all around it and immobilizing it. It's done a lot in both metalworks and circuitry. What do they teach you in school these days? |
