why does it have to be so secret?
ok i know i'll probably get shit for asking this but I'd like to hear some views from you all.
why do rave locations here have to be so secret and only announced the day of the event? I can understand some of the big outdoor ones, they dont want to get busted up but....cops still know about them. permit have to be purchased, equipment rented, its not like the organizers sneak into the woods at midnight and set up when no one is around. who are we trying to hide parties from? rednecks? and then the small ones, people will say "its in new west but I cant say where"...we all know that there are only 1 or 2 venues in new west for parties, so its pretty obvious where it will be. why does it have to be a secret still? It seems like it would make it easier to make plans in advance if everyone knew for sure where a party would be help so they could work out transportation arrangments and travel times. Those are just my thoughts. can someone please fill me in? |

It is illegal to throw an all-night party without a permit. very hard to obtain if i am correct. I like the excitement of not knowing where it is. And since im not from vancity or anywhere really close, its always a good adventure finding the party.
Makes the night that much better. |

are you saying that these parties held at the croatian cultural center or other places like that don't have permits an illegal? its pretty eaasy for a cop to drive by and see a bunch of cars, loud music and tripping 16 yr olds in front of a venue and be able to figure out whats going on. it may be a secret for the weeks before...but the day of the event its pretty obvious. |

Heres the reason....police require 24 hours to obtain any type of search permit and or warrent...if the location is made public a few hours prior to the event happening....and the cops find out about it. the owner of the establishment has the right to deny them access....

well said everyone. thanks for the feedback. those are some points I didn't think of in the past.
and ebbomega: i'm not saying I don't like those types of parties with checkpoints, but its just that sometimes i'd like to know if i'm going to be paying $30 to party in a nice venue or like Bob said, in "a sweaty hole" |

because i dont want a bunch of dumb fuck wankers to be lined up outside my venue tagging my shit and breaking windows because they didnt have enough money to get in.
the harder you make it to show up for the casual fucktard the less fucktards get inside. |

Denying cops access is a certifiable way to get your party busted. Just over 3 years ago, Slipstream threw the party that would ultimately be the death of the production crew. Stupid sweet venue, crazy-ass DJs, everything was set and primed to be a raging killer party. Seriously, this one was going to be a massive party at a stupidly sweet venue with talent up the yin-yang. Lucky Charms 2. So someone has a brilliant idea, and about an hour before the party starts, they decide to order a pizza to the venue. Pizza guy shows up, starts knocking on the front door of the venue, and some cops see this (on East Hastings right at the heart of the Sketch district, I'll note). Finally the guy goes around to the back and starts knocking on that door. Cops follow him. Mess sorted out, idiotboy gets his pizza, and as the pizza guy is leaving, idiotboy sees the cops coming towards the door, wondering "WTF? This place is supposed to be empty?" So what does idiotboy do? Slams the door in the cops' face. Party's over before the first shuttlebus even makes it to the door. Not even gonna let them have it till 2:00. The cop felt too insulted. Just wasn't going to happen. Lesson learned: Treat the cops with fucking respect. They're the goddamn cops already. They're the ones with the guns, the backup and the authority. Don't push them to rain said authority down on you. When it's you vs. the cops, you're going to lose. I've been to many parties where the cops have shown up and they've run all night. More often than not, cops just want to make sure that everybody's safe and not disturbing anybody. If they go into a venue and see 15 year olds whacked out on drugs, it's going to get shut down by 2am at least. If they see a bunch of adults having a good time, and they're treated with respect then it's pretty likely you'll be allowed to go all night. Don't act self-righteous to the cops. They have plenty things, when it comes to raves, that they can bust you on. |

Best parties I've been to have been at sweaty holes. BC Trance-It was in a warehouse where it was practically raining sweat. Puddles of raver sludge were about an inch deep along the entire floor. But nobody cared. That was the beauty of it. For crying out loud, the club where House music was born was called "The Warehouse". Doesn't get much more sweaty and holish than that. *nominates this thread for the Suck It Up, Princess Award* |

That's why they're so secretive, so that that kind of stuff doesn't happen. One of the best arguments for checkpoints right there. |

all the TRUE ravers would agree with that. BUT. if you wanna make money at a party, you gotta draw attention from more than just the people who enjoy the sweaty holes. |

well from personal exp from throwing parties ive had one shutt down because the owner of the building found out we were throwing a rave and came and shut us down, and yes cops dont always know parties are happening, and the 2 outdoor parities ive thrown were just bring the shit out and set it up.and most people do know where the party is gona be before the venue date is released unless your a poser :) least all the hardcores do!! |
