Turntablism is an art but I go to parties to hear the music I want to dance too and don't care for a visual spectacular.

When Swamp hit the decks at NYE I went to hear Christian Alvarez spin some sweet tunes in the theatre.

man i cant wait to sell tickets to talk to everyone about the really high level in depth routing/edge-server projects i do at work. people that don't wanna hear this cutting edge technical stuff are un-educated minions.

i never knew chin stroking superceded entertainment.

Who are you to tell them any different? Maybe they are right. Should they conform to your way of thinking?

Your arguments come straight from the pages of psilocybin logic. Cut down on the hallucinogens.
To answer my critic(s):

No, I'm not making a judgement, I'm making an observation. Never once did I say that it was the wrong way or the right way to think. And never in this thread did I say that I was right and they were wrong. I just offered an argument as to why people couldn't or wouldn't wrap their minds around a new musical genre. You don't buy it? Fine but it's not like you're offering alternatives. I will say that you're picking up a lot of shit in my writing that's not there - hallucinogens must be what we have in common.

personally at nye.. i was disappointed at swamps performance... i could appreciate what he was doing.. and understood the regulations or restrictions he had.. but because i say i didnt like his set or what have you.. should i have to now stay home and listen to cds because im "uneducated?"

very well said. It was really intersesting to see him in a club setting where you could get up close compared to NYE where most people where there just to dance. So a big thanks for bringing him back.

to me i see what swamp does as a form of art...and as with most forms of art there will always be people the critisize it.. some with good feedback.. some with bad.. some with none.. but you dont have to pay attention to them if it "annoys the fuck out of you"
I dont listen to them...but that doesnt lesson the fact that they annoy me. I still talk to you when you're drunk and that annoys me to no end. ;)

Stop taking everything I said on such a literal level. I shouldnt have to justify my comments to you (or anyone) in a section of this forum called "the punching bag" for a reason. Second, everyone should watch what they say around me because i'm one bad motherfucker. Bottom line, is that i found it annoying and it frustrated me so i posted a small rant...i'm not trying to "change the scene" or instigate a "staying home rule" for everyone i think is an idiot. Although thats a great idea. :)

i usually dont care if the crowd understand what i'm doing or not, if they're dancing thats the bottom line. No one has to be on the same comprehension level as myself, nor do i expect them too. There's no use playing devils advocate because my opinion has already been formulated and will most likely stay that way.

You shouldnt stay home....but i wouldnt expect to see you at another one of his performances. my main complaint is that crowds lacking the simple thing to research what a dj spins before they even attend his show. Its would be like walking into a library and grabbing the first book you see without even reading the title. All i am asking for is a little intelligence. Wouldnt it be wise to know what a dj spins before you even go? Yes. of course it would.

Pete - not directed to you at all :)

yes yes... it definetely takes a lot of time & pratice to perfect turntableism. it defenetly takes more co-ordintaion then say a guitar, but both instruments require huge level of creativity to perfom them.

and to play samples at the right pitch isnt a walk in the park either, plus you have to worry a bout sound levels and over all performance of what you are doing... it's all a science as well as it is art man!

sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken.

I would go to see Aphex Twin or Autechre. I would definitely not care if I'd dance there or not [not that either does live gigs but anyway], but I know what to expect.

As for elitism [I can't let it slip away :)] I think it usually takes quite a large amount of knowledge regarding something before you could become 'elite' and segregate yourself. Cliques formed through ignorance do not deserve [sic] to be called 'elitist'. An art major could not be able to understand the subtleties of a self-taught AI systems, but [s]he should be able to respect the value of it.

And yeah, you can respect something and not like it. But that means you know something about art/technology/[turntablism], more than just the average joe does. You can't say Dali was not a genius, just because what you like is neo-impressionism. And it would be a milestone of ignorance to say his work is *shit*.

Anyway just some 2 cents I had...

werd. but when you're going from a scratch routine doing things like the crab & flares, then beat matching & then moving onto a beat juggling routine it may average to about to the same level of coordiantion & skill.

with the vast diversity this gene of music has....those listening would proove to be very ignoraant when confined to their own set boundaries.....my preferance is progressive house, but i'm fascinated with many of of the other genres out there....the talent to do it always amazes me....I for one would love to see what you could do with turn tables my friend...
