people not stopping when someone is hurt
i am so fucking sick of hearing this on the news or reading about it in the paper.
the most recent one was a gentleman in surrey who was hit by a car and about 15 people just kept driving... and who could forget the girl in poco who screamed for help while being abducted and no one even phoned 9/11 and she was found dead in the river. how can people just ignore someones cries for help? this is just fucking disgusting |

Yah that was sad to hear about that girl that was killed in the river. My friend went to school with her, and it happened near her neigbourhood. It's hard sometimes to really tell with screaming though. I know kids near my house do it all the time just randomly. You can't tell if they are just joking around, because it always seems like the same kids time after time. But at 5 in the morning in that situation I wished someone had called the cops. But I know it's hard to tell sometimes. It just makes me sad because at times I worry that maybe someone really is hurt, and I have done nothing. |

^^^ ya but you would think that someone would have at least looked outta their window...saw that the girl was in trouble and called 9/11
i know i would always help no matter what i mean because i am a female i wont stop if i see a guy just standing beside his car on the hwy...but i would try to at least help by phoning the non-emergency line or something... i have stopped before for a guy that flipped his car and landed in the ditch on the #1.... i cant imagine not stopping, not even trying to do something... i would hope that if i ever in a horrible situation that someone would help me out.. |

Not all people are like that..... back about a month ago when that nutjob went off shooting his ex in Port Moody I was front and center for that one. I admit when he looked me right in the eyes that I hid for a minute but as soon as I felt semi-safe I was back out there taking in as much as I could for the police.
I honestly think that human beings are good for the most part and will help others when need be. It was an unfortunate situation with what happened to the old fella who got hit in Surrey but hardly characteristic of our society, IMO. |

That reminds me of once when I was in the car with my dad. On the corner near my house, there's a stop sign where my dad was turning. Plenty of cars went by, but no one noticed the old man who had fallen on the corner, half in the bush. :( I pointed it out to my dad and made him turn around. Poor guy. Turns out someone had already called the ambulance, but didn't have the decency to stay with him.

In general, the more people there are to 'witness' the 'crime' or 'incident', the more they ignore it. People are convinced that because there are so many others present at the time, that someone else will surely help them. They don't want to take responsibility for something they don't have to if they can just easily put a blind eye to it.
In the same way, it's why people get rowdy in large riots, it increases the annoymity of the situation and you feel as if your responsibility decreases. So you can 'get away' with shit you normally would get in trouble for, because it's harder to hold a single person responsible. There are so many people in the world, you can't help them all. |

social psychologists have done many studies on bystander passivity.. and they've found that as the number of bystanders increases, the likelihood of intervention decreased.
with such large numbers, people are less likely to take responsiblity, as the responsiblity is diffused among all the bystanders. sometimes, they may even assume the incident is not an emergency (i.e. a person may be lying on the ground somewhere, but because no one is going over to help, you think, 'ok, no one else is worried, so perhaps it's just not a big deal'). it's a shame what happened... but I would not be quick to consider these people thoughtless, evil beings.... given a different situation, these people might have intervened if the number of bystanders weren't so large. --Joanne :P |
