Plagiarism! Stupid Copy-cats.
I take Sociology 250 through distance ed, and this requires me to post messages on an online conferencing board with my fellow group mates. We are also required to post our assignments (300 word) before the due date/time in our "Base groups". This allows each group member to see one another's work. I noticed at first that this one chick's Assignment 1 was very similar to mine (except mine was better, obviously). What caught my attention was that she directly copy and pasted my citations. I know this because I made a typo in my references: instead of saying "westview p" I wrote "wesview p" in my references. Surprise surpise, not only was her citation style parallel to mine, the exact typo was in her citations in the exact same order as mine. She could have copied other people's citations (we all cited it differently for some reason, probably because we didn't know how to cite tihs particular piece) but for some reason, she used mine.. which I think is wrong to begin with.
Then comes Assignment 3. She uses the exact same examples derived from the text, and where we are asked to construct her own opinions, she not only supports the SAME theorist as I do, she supports the EXACT SAME opinion as mine. This is highly unlikley to be a coincidence, because everyone's responses varied except for hers and mine. I used a SPECIFIC and subtle example that i *knew* most people wouldn't think of to use, and she used it too. And again, she copy and pasted my referencing style. What's more is that she always posts her assignment about 2 hours after I do,and she always posts it LATE (past 4:30). By the things she has to say in conferences, I get the sense that she's not very bright anyway. It fucking pisses me off. CONCLUSION: PLAGIARIZERS ARE WEAK!!! For god sakes, I don't understand how these idiots make it through school. Learn to think for yourselves and give credit where credit is due. |

What's also interesting is that the teacher/prof didn't notice the copying. Which could mean they're not reading the student work.
When I was in Grade 11 same thing happened. Some guys copied another guy's history report, everyone was in the same class. The teacher did not notice that some were actually copied or we would have heard about it bigtime. But on the marks, what happened was that the people that the teacher liked got really good grades, while the guys the teacher did not like, were given bad grades. So obviously the teacher did not even read the stuff and just dished out whatever marks came into her head. Yeah, we should have complained to someone about that. Lesson learned: teachers cheat too. That teacher acted like she was pretty hot. And she was, and not much older than us. Even ran for MLA, but lost. Last edited by tvmann; Oct 28, 04 at 12:52 AM. |

No I'm sure that she did read each of our responses as she gave us individualized responses on each of our work(the Tutor-marker), but she has so many to read and we're all talking about the same topic, same theorists and same ideas that I don't think that it's obvious for her to notice HOW similar certain papers are... The part that this "girl'' copied directly from mine (copy and pasted) was my references... and that's how I got a clue that she was copying my work. I don't think the TM looks through out Works Cited in detail because we all use the same source. I e-mailed my tm and she says that this is "serious business" and that she will get back to me in a couple days after consulting the prof.. I don't wish bad things to happen to this girl or anything...i just hope that she doesn't get any credit for either of the two assignments. Both of her assignments were written poorly to begin with anyway, so I don't think she'd get any more than a B- on either... What's more is that she joined out base group LATE. We were all required to introduce ourselves by the end of the first week of classes but we didn't hear from her until 3 weeks later, after we'd already had submitted one assignment and 2 conferences. Apparently, she had a 'family funeral' to attend to... but for 3 weeks!? |

ok i'm guilty of taking full advantage of distant ed classes. it is SOOO easy to plagiarize and completely get away with it. i hate online discussions... all i pretty much do is find other peoples answers and reword them and morph the arguments into my own while keeping the sources and facts. hehehe saves so much time and the best is when you can plagiarize your own work... i got this paper on japan i have to write, and i wrote a paper about the same topic in sociology so fuck it i'm just gonna hand in the other paper! haha |
