Über would be the proper word. But that still doesn't help explain why people took a german word and made it common.
Translated to english it even roughtly means over, not 'super or ultra' as it seems to be used. Almost as bad as people who throw japanese words into regular english. Anyone use the word "Totally" a lot, like me? I can't stand the word myself but then I always find myself using it.
Bling, Pimp, Rad, Wicked, Cooltastic, Tubular, Totally, Uber... the list of dumbass but fun words goes on.

Totally, Rock, Kickin', Intense... tons of words that mean "that's pretty frikkin' cool".
Language is. People use what words they use. If the message is received on the other side, great, it worked, you communicated. I imagine overuse of words can be annoying (one of the things I despised about Seinfeld's run was hearing about it afterwards.... Jesus, they even told you you were being programmed and you ran with it, ya automatons). I don't hear uber often though... so it still works for me.
