So effing CHOKED!
So, my work has a policy that they will pay for any full-time employee's educational development. I took November 19th off work so that I can write my GED, and they didn't even fucking pay for the day off! Not only that, they didn't even offer to pay for my testing costs ($60), or even ask me to bring in my receipt! So, thanks to these cheap fuckers, I'm now out $140 that I THOUGHT they would cover due to our company policies!
Yet, our head shipper and one of the other girls here in customer service took an Intro to Excel class at BCIT in the spring that cost the company $450 for each of them, ANNNNNNNND neither of them even USE Excel in their jobs!! @#$%^ I fucking haaaaaaaaaaate my work! |

Call the HR Manager and have a meeting. Be sure to bring in your employee documentation that you were given highlighting this "employee's educational development" perk.
Come already armed with your receipts so that you can hand them over at the end of the meeting. |

did you actually verify the costs of what you were doing specifically be covered by that clause before you got it done?
It's always a safe bet to always verify things first, especially their specifics if your contract vaguely refers to that being covered... |

tough situation.
i agree with myra. maybe you should have talked to them about it before rather then just expecting something out of them, but you should talk to them now and tell them what you expected and what you know about this policy. maybe they'll reimburse you |

I think its funny that an Intro to Excel course would cost $450. Any moron could definately figure shit out on their own easily, all it takes is a litte effort
You definately seem to be getting the short end of the stick with this work thing, and I know this is MUCH easier said than done... But maybe its time for you to move on to a place that will appriciate you and honor agreements/policies made. Best luck though. |

Yeah everyones right! There could be stipulations regarding education for instance it could have to be related to your work. You should have definetly contacted them in advance to ensure that the policy covered the education you were going to be conducting. Shitty deal but hopefully lesson learned and life goes on!

Well, I just talked to my boss, and he said that he agrees that I should be paid at least for the cost of the test, and that he will talk to my HR manager about it.
The policy is actually just that the company will reimburse the employee for "...any cost of educational development, related or not related to the employee's position..." I don't doubt that if I bring the receipt for the test that they will reimburse me, but I reaaaaaally was expecting to be allowed to take a sick/vacation paid day, but here is my paycheque, missing a full day's work =( Maple, I definitely need to find a new job. However, I'm going back to school in Sept and I just got a second job, so it's going to be difficult to find a job that a) only wants me until August, and b) will be supportive and work around my evening/weekend job. |
