is a big vocabulary really nessicary?
ok i'd like to start off by saying that my spelling and grammar may be quite bad but i'll try to keep it good. my question is ..... is it nessicary to know and use big words in writing and regular speech? i believe that if you are talking to someone and you aren't using big words BUT they still totally understand what you are saying while using "simple" words, isn't that just fine? my english 12 teacher is gettin on my case about inproving my vocabulary because literally half the time i don't understand what she is saying (but i think that is partly because she is from New Foundland). whenever she says a word i don't understand i put my hand up and ask what it means, she'll make a little joke about me asking then tell me what it means. i'm definatlly not book smart, at all but i am quite knowledgealbe in street smarts. give me a upset person and i can help them sort stuff out and in the end maybe have them laughing.
so i say: if you can say the same thing but shorter and simpler, the better to ya |

Reasearch indicates that among human beings vocabulary is considered the best measure of intelligence. Need i say more? You read those mind numbingly boring profiles out there and you will see why exactly it is that i hate people so much. Such unabashed violations of the english language, you'd think that we have an inferior school system in place here in canada.... who would have thought??? |

I'd say a large(r) volcabulary is always important. You're supposed to speak to others at the same interval/level as they speak to you on. And generally once you turn 15 you're going to be talking to just as many adult figures as you are children your age. However, i met somebody that used "big words" all the time and nobody could understand her. So we looked them up in the dictionary, and it turns out she was using them for the totally wrong reasons.

Language is how you express yourself.. words paint a picture, and if you're just using one syllable, you're drawing with crayons. I once hooked up with a girl who knew nothing about me but tracked me down because of what I posted (on LOUNGE-X!).. she told me "It's like you say exactly what I'm thinking.. but I can't express myself like you can.." Awww girl, you don't love me, you just love my words. |

Ever wonder why, after the cuban missile crisis, they had a telephone line installed directly between the White House and the Kremlin?
Because just about every war, every battle, every political conflict that has come to pass has been a result of miscommunication. So where exactly are those WMDs? Oh yeah.... They don't exist. Way to go, American Intelligence. Saddam coulda told you that before you went in and started killing all his people. In fact, he did. |

i think having a wide vocabulary is a good thing, its alright to use slang sometimes (msn, with friends, etc) but once you enter the working world and you have to meet and deal with employers & co-workers than it is important to have a large, educated vocabulary. also it makes u look smart and makes things alot easier when comunicating with others :)

yeah it is
there are many times where i'm stumped to find a word to describe certain things... theres a word for literally everything. helps you nail down your thoughts solidly. for my korean i have the basic foundation down but since i haven't been using it much since grade 7 i find it really hard to carry long conversations in korean since i lack the vocab... i gotta resort to konglish. and i feel like a retard always stumped to find the right word |
