if the windows setup disk is offering to reformat his drive, it knows its there. keep in mind that he didn't understand fdisk, so he might not actually know whether or not the drive is being detected or not, he's not exactly a huge power user (no offense, ff)

neoh, i think ff was just using the wrong terminology. if the harddrive wasnt detected then windows wouldn't have provided the option of reformatting the partition
with that in mind, chkdsk could definately do the trick in certain situations |

It's called probing questions, son. I can say try fdisk /mbr, that might fix it too, I guess it all depends on what it is. I can school you on computers any day, fat kid. So instead of attempting to fix a problem with "OH WELL, THIS WORKED SO IT SHOULD WORK FOR YOU!" methods, go read a book. |

Simon, try the other options rebuilding the boot.ini file, especially the "attrib yada yada" one, a damaged boot.ini CAN make a hard drive appear damaged. Also What kind of programs did you have installed on there? Norton System works can make a hard drive appear like that as can pretty much every hard drive compression software on the market. Before you give up on it, try some other options, If you can find out what kind of hard drive it is (the CMOS walk through can help you, it might also say as the computer is booting) I can give you diagnostics software that boots on a floppy disc to check the Hard drive. Common Manufactures to look for are: Seagate, Maxtor, Wester Digital (might be listed as WD), IBM/Hitachi Make sure whoever you give the computer to fix knows what they're doing, there's lots of people out there that *THINK* they know what they're doing with hard drive recovery, but they might just give up and format the hard drive rather than trying to rebuild a partition table or something. |

The place I'm taking it came highly reccomended by a friend who is a tech guy, so I (think) they should be relatively trustworthy. (hopes) |

neoh just pointed out in another thread that I made a typo:
attrib -h -r -s c:\boot.ini desl c:\boot.ini hit ENTER Next Type in: bootcft /rebuild and hit ENTER. should be attrib -h -r -s c:\boot.ini del c:\boot.ini hit ENTER Next Type in: bootcft /rebuild and hit ENTER. thx, yo |
