1) That's not him reading. The original song, Everybody's Free (To Feel Good) was written in the 80s, the big rant was a newspaper article in the NYT, and the only association really that Luhrmann has with the song was that the guy singing Everybody's Free (To Feel Good) is the choirboy from William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, which he produced/wrote/directed. They accredited it to him because it's from a compilation CD of a bunch of songs from his various movies, plays and productions.
2) Moulin Rouge was one of the best musicals I've seen. It's sad you don't like it Dave. Frankly, the Marmalade/Teen Spirit mashup was pretty fucking cool. The whole first 30 minutes blew my mind.
