so recently through my girlfriend i've become friends with a girl named Francesca (sp?). Her family is from Italy and she's a second generation Canadian, and it's only worth mentioning because I think what i'm experiencing is a bit of a culture clash.
My background with my family is that we're pretty calm, self-depcrecating, and easy going. I dunno, we're Scandinavians and we're cool like that
Anyway, we went out for dinner tonight with her family and her siblings. I was trying to break the ice by making some light conversation and throughout the course of the meal her dad kept pouncing on things i would say, or what other people would say, and try to constantly gain the upperhand in the conversation to make an irrelavent point while gesticulating wildly like a fucking idiot
I would say something benign like, "so this place has got some great lighting" and the guy would shoot back with "you can't judge a book by it's cover"
The mom was a lot like Judge Judy too.
I got the impression that they didn't like me, but according to the GF her whole family is like this, and it's an "Italian thing". Basically he kept fronting like he was hard the whole night, and everyone was subtley attacking eachother with liberal use of "fuck", "faggot", etc. and the males constantly saying they would beat the shit out of eachother
Cliffs: Fran's family is very confrontational and thrives on conflict. I'm not really feelin it but gf wants us to hang out with Fran more
