Starbucks Machiattos

They're not even real machiattos!!

I work in a coffee shop, and i hate it when ppl keep asking for machiattos when they dont know what the real ones are (it's really just an espresso shot topped with foam). But it's not reALLY their fault, I blame it on starbucks.

Me or some other girl would serve one and theyd be like, what the hell is this? I've been reduced to asking every customer if they want a starbucks machiatto (which is really like a mocha but with caramel in place of chocolate) or a reAL one.

Starbucks serves both a macchiatto and a caramel macchiatto does it not? No doubt that people expecting one of the starbucks caramel variety getting a regular one and turning their nose up would be annoying... In France (totally different scale, I know) we asked for hamburgers at this restaurant and they had to check-in that we knew that what they were gonna serve was not an 'american' hamburger. Hehe.

I work at starbucks.
an espresso machiatto is a shot topped with foam....

caramel and maple macchiattos have the shot poured on top because machiatto=shot on top...

Basically the definition of a machiatto is a shot of espresso with just a dab of steamed or foamed milk on top. I'm guessing this is what this chick is argueing

But there is also the Latte Machiatto which means milk or steamed milk marked with espresso ala Caramel Machiatto etc..

Maybe its only a westcoast thing but Starbucks ain't the only place to have latte machiatto's.

i don't know how else to respond to this.

Don't blame it on starbucks

Courtney and Kenji are right,

Machiatto means 'mark' in Italian, in a latte machiatto you are basically marking the foam with espresso.

God get your facts straight people, if you want a real espresso machiatto and a good one go to one of the Italian coffee shops on the Drive (I personally recommend Caffe Abruzzo).

ah ok... but dear, thats confusing. I work for an Italian family, I guess they only told me the espresso-topped-with-foam bit of it. latte machiatto... but then arent all lattes latte machiattos... meh. coffee shops should really say that eh, whether its an espresso machiatto or a latte machiatto... plainly just "machiatto" is too confusing for the north american public. and if yourethinkin "yea, just YOU," we have too many ppl coming in the store who have no idea. they're all... espresso shot? foam? whats up?

Um, almost every specialty coffee drink (with a few exceptions) are foam and espresso done up in some way. Maybe you should just get over it.

No not all lattes, are latte machiattos. Caramel and Maple and speciality latte's usually are.

Normal latte's have the shot poured in first. Hence its not a machiatto

no latte machiatto's are usually 2/3 steamed milk and 1/3 foam with the espresso shot poured in last whereas a regular latte has the shot poured in first and is filled up with steamed milk and topped off with about an inch of foam unless requested otherwise.

But yeah most people don't realize that they just order a machiatto assuming it's a latte machiatto.

I love how people will always come into threads and make stupid condescending comments, seriously this is coffee talk if you can't keep up then fuck off, nobody cares that you hate coffee or that you don't have the intellectual capacity to know the difference between these drinks (WhiteDove this isn't directed at you).

Too many people you are the holy messenger serving the bean of function..people depend on you psychogically to reassure them that it's on it's way, so the dillusional customers cant really help it:). I would say just ignore the overly twichy ones who are complaining. It is coffee...and coffee is a powerful thing. Many of us dont understand the politics of coffee..the little names and gadgets that you use to make it taste so wonderful. There's always going to be the select few that get to you...and it's probably withdrawal, or the frustration of the fact they cant just hop over your counter and steal all your little magic tools.
