Private school sucks to....
I know there are "alterntive" schools.. I think i'm going to look into them. the whole Public school thing is old. I just never realize how bad the learning factor actually is affected. and not all schools are bad, some are better this one the boys go to.. is off the charts bad. |

Waldorf school. All kids learn to cook, sew, knit, play a string instrument and a woodwind instrument as well as how to garden and cutural/religious/racial tolerance. Plus they are waaaaaay ahead academically. And they have the same teacher from kindergarten through to grade 12. If I have kids, that's where I'm sending them. They also have a sliding tuiton scale so they charge you according to your income.

who cares what he's reading, at least he's reading! ps - i work in the vancouver public school system and while it's not perfect i think that it works for more than the majority of children enrolled..... what's the point of looking into alt. schools now? wait until you meet you child and get to know him before you start making these choices! that sparked a reading flame in me and now i LOVE reading. when i was 11 my favorite author was John Steinbeck. read almost all of his books. that put me in the top 2% in english when i hit grade 10 because i just loved reading so much. so i say, let the kids read what they want. AT LEAST THEY'RE READING. |

how about it's got nothing to do with public schools, and everything to do with the parents? i suggest speaking to the parents you're babysitting for as opposed to demonizing the public school system. |

when I moved from Alberta in grade 10, I had learned every aspect of every subject in previous grades. I believe I had over 100% in English 10 up until the final, and over 95% in the rest with out breaking a sweat. BC Education is a joke, even compared to Alberta. Wonder why all these foreign students are the top of their classes and take all the spots at UBC? BC Education is a joke, that's why.

My mother runs a childrens bookstore where Captain Underpants is one of the best sellers.
In a perfect world, Linsday, we would have our children reading only very smart intellectual pieces of literature (books of poetry, maths, history etc) to get them reading, unfortunately this is not how it works. The numbers are showing that way more kids these days have learning disabilities. Some cant read, lots simply wont. Books are fighting with video games and television and children tend to look to their parents or guardians as role models in this. If all your child ever sees you do is sitting in front of the tv and never reading of course that's going to influence their choice. If a book like Captain Underpants, while totally silly and "rude" as you called it, is getting kids to read: then what's really the problem here? Last edited by .muffy.; Apr 28, 06 at 03:28 PM. |

Discord:: I think something you're looking for is Montessori schools (and I mean REAL ones, with people that have actually gone abroad to be trained instead of some lame online correspondence) they are fabulous. I went to one from age 2.5-6 and I started first grade already knowing how to read, write, do simple math, sew, prep snacks etc. Whereas most kids only start learning those in first grade. I think they are only provided for kids up until grade 7 though? I'm not 100% sure.

Discord, clearly you don't know what you're talking about.
You can't only blame the school you went to for your education - where do your parents take responsibility? I had great teachers throughout my public school experience - however, it was due to my parents that I was ahead of the pack. I could already read and write before I even set foot in a kindergarten class, because of the simple fact that my mom and dad did their job and parents and gave me a head start. Also, it is the parents responsibility as well as the teachers' to notice if a child is falling behind and to take corrective action. The teacher has 30 kids in a class, the average family has 2.4 kids - you tell me who has an easier task in identifying a child's progress? Anyhow. My point simply is that parents need to start taking repsonsibility for their children. |

I went to a great private school up till Gr.7, then for highschool i went public
which was a big mistake, nothing beats a private school education, it is top notch, u learn morals and discpline 2 things u dont learn in public school. I agree there is no way my child is going to public school, thats wha got me into skipping and drugs but i was lucky I got out and did something with my life, alot of my old freinds are still stuck in the same rut and it hurts:254: please only make a comment to my post if u have been to private school for 1 year or more or else you are biased Last edited by Ray!; Apr 30, 06 at 10:11 AM. |

lmao, your basing your views on public schools on a 7 yr old kid reading a stupid book. yeah , cuz that's all he's gunna learn for the next 10 years. (not that I'm defending public schools, I never learned anything worthwhile..) but what are you gunna do, have your kid homeschooled so he ends up being a loser with no friends, having klingon sex.. err.. wait..
