"New Innovative Songs!"
It kinda pisses me off when a major artist does something outside of the box and everybody takes it as some super inventive shit that nobody has done or thought about before..
"have you heard ***** by ********, it's so sad, I mean someone gets raped in it!" "What about ***** by ********, he like actually sets a scene and story when he raps instead of just saying lines, like wtf eh!" "he put sckratching in his last track. He totally brought hip-hop roots back" "He's like the fastest rapper!" "Whoa he's making fun of another rapper. I wonder if he's going to get shot or sued or something cuz i've never heard that done" |

I really hated when I was more into punk music and all my favorite bands started releasing albums that they said in interviews were "more technical" aka they've gone totally shit emo.
Ruined a few good bands, imo. uhh was that relevant? maybe. I just cringed every time I heard a band say that and I heard it a lot like 6 years ago. |

everything has been done. From Mozart, Brahms, and Mussorgsky who were phenomenal musical pioneers.. to Sabbath who first brought the diminished fifth (the Devil's Tone) from the blues scale into rock and roll, thus creating heavy metal.. to The Clash, The Ramones, Sonic Youth, and Green River who made music raw and gritty. Few people can truly claim to be 100% original anymore. Few people have ever been able to claim this in history. Even the artists I mentioned weren't 100% original.

personally I think St Anger was decent. I knew it wouldn't be anything like their old shit, since they signed a new bassist. If you look at their discography, there was a drastic change in their sound when they signed Newsted for And Justice For All. I expected the same with Trujillio and I was right. It's a raw, angry album and is still full of energy. Really, it's still better than Load.

almost everything that happened in music so far was part of a natural evolution. Like if one guy didnt do it, another probably wouldve or atleast did something similar. There have been instances of artists writing very similar songs and accused of ripping off the other artist when in fact they may have never even heard the song before. Musicians play what they think will sound good. And how do they know it will sound good? because they've either heard something like it, or they can imagine what it will sound like - which just comes from their retained memory of music and sounds, and knowledge of equipment. In my opinion, true innovations in music had to do more with the equipment they were using. The synthesizer. thats a musical innovation The electric guitar. thats a musical innovation. Using turntables as instruments. thats a musical innovation. Artists playing the blues and calling it rock and roll. Tho it maybe cool, its not an innovation, its just playing the blues faster with an electric guitar and longer hair. When it comes right down to it, its still just the motherfuckin blues! Combining Heavy Metal with Hip hop ala Linkin Park / Limp Bizkit . that is not cool, that is not a musical innovation. That is sacrilege. |
