Hyphy (pronounced hi-fee; IPA: [ˈhaɪfiː]) is a style of music and dance associated with San Francisco Bay Area hip hop culture. It began to emerge in early 2000 as a response from Bay Area rappers against commercial hip hop for not acknowledging the Bay for setting trends in the hip hop industry.[1][2] Although the "hyphy movement" has just recently seen light in mainstream America, it has been a long standing and evolving culture in the Bay Area. Bay Area rapper Keak Da Sneak takes credit for coining the term when he was a young boy, as his mother would often tell him he was hyper. He would repeat the word "hyper" as "hyphy", and to this day, continues to use the word "hyphy" to describe his behavior.

It is distinguished by gritty, pounding rhythms, and in this sense can be associated with the Bay as crunk music is to the South. Contrary to popular belief, the musical aspect of the movement has very few similarities to crunk music, as it is dictated by more uptempo beats. An individual is said to "get hyphy" when they act or dance in an overstated and ridiculous manner. Many in the Bay Area would describe this as acting "Retarded", "Riding The Yellow Bus", "Stupid" or "Going Dumb". E-40 is seen by many in the Bay Area as the "door opener" to a much bigger movement yet to be exposed to the world in its entirety.

i like this stuff a lot, has the heavy bass and agressive rhymes of crunk but at a tempo i find a lot more appealing. plus i find the mcing/lyrical content a lot better than most of the dirty south stuff. "3 Freaks" is one of the years best singles of ANY genre imo, also just picked up "tell me when to go" which is another huge banger.

Mac Dre hailed from Vallejo, California. His music gained popularity in the early to mid 1990s throughout the Bay Area, eventually receiving national recognition through his independent record labels Romp and Thizz Entertainment. During his music career, he has released many hit singles, such as "Too Hard for the Radio", and most recently "Feelin' Myself". He was the creator of the "Thizzle Dance", a popular dance which holds no specific standard. Hardship and controversy were staples of Mac Dre's career. After recording his first three albums between 1989 and 1991, Mac was charged with conspiracy to commit bank robbery. His record label, Romp Productions, and his many references to "Romper Room" in his songs, coincided with a Vallejo robbery gang of the time calling themselves the "Romper Room Gang" and responsible for the robberies of many area banks and pizza parlours. Hicks was alleged to be a member of the gang.[citation needed] The rapper was sentenced to five years in prison in 1992.

In prison, Hicks gained some notoriety by recording the lyrics to songs directly over the Fresno County jail inmate telephone. His album, Young Black Brotha, was a result of such efforts, as well as guest appearances on fellow artists' songs, all while Hicks was still imprisoned. A later album, Back 'N Da Hood, was also made up of these prison-recorded songs.

After his release from prison in 1996, Mac Dre began releasing albums steadily, building pace in the early 21st century. Mac Dre's audience was growing, and mainstream hip-hop stations were beginning to give Hicks' music more airtime. Hicks relocated to Sacramento, California in 2001, where he began a label, Thizz Entertainment. A notorious ecstasy enthusiast, he is credited with coining the slang verb to thizz, which refers to the state of being high on the drug. He was one of the precursors of the current Thizz movement, a hip hop subculture based around ecstasy use .[1]

Hyphy started out as a bay area thing down in Cali as far as I know.

I'll be honest that I don't know too much about the genre although from what I've heard I don't mind it so much. The problem is that anything even semi-responsible for 'thizz face' and 'ghost riding the whip' needs to be shut down pronto!! haha

Hyphy would be much better if both of those retardo things weren't associated with it!

Interesting!! I just read about this genre while reading a Hochi interview on dogs on acid. He describes it as "an extremely fast up-tempo dance hip hop hybrid... like a street rave."

EDIT: i just watched the video... Thizzlam?? haha.. Ghostriding?? interesting culture for sure!
