your definition assumes that anyone educated in music would automatically choose a 'real' instrument over creating music electronically. wrong! many of my favorite electronic producers are trained instrumentalists who also have finely honed production skills. and many other of my favorite producers are just guys like me who have little or no background in music theory, may not even be trained in studio technique, but know how to turn out a banging tune for the dancefloor. at any rate, as long as the desired result is being achived, it's hard to imagine any of these people really caring whether or not you think they are a real musician. |

Andy C is the Tiesto of DnB.... and i guess Z Trip is the Tiesto of really good DJing, 'mashup' not being a genre but really, c'mon... even from a fan's p.o.v. it can't be that hard to see what offends people about this guy... even if i liked his horrible eurotrash anthem music i'd be put off by the utter pomposity of his live presence. not that that singles him out in any way, i feel the same way about almost every euro-trance DJ i've witnessed. i just seems to go with the territory which is probably why i despise the entire genre. DnB, as rave genres go, i find more appealing because in most cases you have DJ & an MC just going for it, really putting all their energy into the mixing & spitting, feeding off the crowd & giving back as much raw energy as their getting from them. Not this idea that waving your hands in the air like an orchestra conductor on quaaludes for 6 minutes between changing records somehow constitutes a performance. but that's only my opinion, to each their own... but anyone thinks this guy is a god, my opinion is that you're a moron. |

some dude in the shop the other day was trying to tell Rob & I that we were going to be out of work as DJs soon, because once the Benny Benassi music takes over there'll be no more clubs playing funk & hip hop. Apparently it's already happened in Montreal, according to him you'd have to search far & wide to find a club there that plays anything other than Benny Benassi.

And one last post and then I'll shut up.
This whole thread is actually 5 years old. Just replace "Tiesto" with "Paul Oakenfold" and watch the similarities just fall into place. In fact, pick any time period and replace "Tiesto" with whoever Mixmag names as #1 dj of the year and you'll have basically the same argument amongst the same people.... |
