What makes a good DJ...
In my opinion its someones who add his own stamp to their set. Dj's generally play other peoples music (unless of course you produce all your own tracks). So a DJ who adds his own touch to a track or set is a good DJ. Whether it be samples, scratching, beat juggling, or just tricks youve learned through the years. When you listen to their set you can recognize that its DJ *name* set. In my opinion that makes a good DJ. No matter what genre of music.

Knowing how a track will affect the crowd, choosing tracks in order to build them to a high-energy momentum without them really noticing it, seamless mixes unless otherwise intended... and most importantly, playing shit regardless of whether it's old or new or overplayed or never heard so long as it sounds good. That's last bit is a concept that is out grasp for most Van DJs, but at the same time, the ones that do impress me usually earn the label 'great DJ' in tenfolds.
Oh, and playing great music that isn't necessarily the latest craze is usually a good thing. That's why I love hearing hardstyle and dubstep played out... and why I love to play really dark techy breaks. They sound great and it's refreshing to hear something different. |

By crowd interaction do you simply mean looking up and smiling? Bobbing your head? Recognizing the crowd?

stimulants are a performance enhancer in most cases. If anything it should improve a set.
I think the problem is crappy dj's thinking an 8ball is gonna make them any more than a crappy dj high on coke. This is a problem considering the abundance of crappy djs in the scene. so I guess what I'm trying to say is... to the djs who maybe the next q-bert or z-trip - im totally cool with you havin a toot before the gig! |

all seriousness. this is my opinion of not just a good dj. but a great dj..
- Stage presence, charisma (enjoy yourself! i dont wanna see screwface junkie grimacing behind the decks like someone just pissed in his kokanee. SMILE! ITS A PARTY!!!!) - Crowd interaction (don't overdue it! we just wanna hear the music, but don't forget about the audience: find a balance) - Track Selection (self explanatory) - Technical Skills (mixing, turntablism etc.) what sets the great djs from the good djs... ORIGINALITY!!! surprize me! I wanna hear the freshest tracks, nostalgiac songs, unheard bootlegs and unreleased original work (if the dj produces as well) and nowadays with the advent of the dvd decks, there is more of an expectation for DJs to incorporate a visual aspect to their performance i.e. the great Mike Relm.
