Pirate Radio
We need Pirate radio! That's an awsome way to make the scene grow. We should give the stupids some chance to develop some taste. That way the majority will demand for better lineups, and more diversity.
Come on people, we all got some kinda hook up. Lets all come together and start a pirate station. Maybe Chris Sheppard will come and hang out and do a k-tel ClubCuts cd for us. All kidding aside, we need a pirate station. Look what it has done in the UK. I think people worldwide would take more notice of our scene if we got this going. |

There already is a pirate station. Im not sure about the laws but I guess as long as its not bleeding over other signals then I dont think CRTC will bother you.
We might set up the broadcast as a simulcast. So it'll also be on air and shoutcast (I can set it to 32K so that dial up people could still log in - as long as you dont try to surf while you're listening) . If it happens I 'll post the address later. Arek http://www.futureassassin.com http://www.hardmusic.ca |

you can build a transmitter and all the necessary other bits for around $3000-$4000 canadian, less if you go really cheap. there's a place out in burnaby on hastings near the nbi that sells ham radio stuff and has a lot of the parts. the important thing is to get good "harmonic limiting" to prevent transmissions on the multiples of the frequency you choose and therefore prevent bleeding into other established stations, which pisses off the crtc something fierce. the antennas for fm broadcast are several metres long, but are really just some copper wire and some insulators, they can be built on to trees. a vcr on slp can play 6 hours of high quality audio on a single tape, set it and forget it. a cel phone without a contract is a good idea. canadian broadcast laws are different than american in many ways, look into the history of native owned and operated unlicensed stations in the far north......any native reserves on high ground here? retain a lawyer. be prepared to have your investment confiscated, which doesn't really matter since it'd be hard to sell and recoup anyway.
i've often thought about this as you can tell. |

On a more legal side note, I think you can work a deal out with shaw to broadcast via cable, provided you are a "community service" the laws require them to permit you to broadcast, provided you jump through a few hoops.
You could fire the stream to them via the internet, they could decode it at their end and transmit via cable as long as you provide the hardware. If you dont want their signal boosting capabilities, you could easily build an FM modulator with a bit of juice and fire the signal BACK DOWN THE CABLE LINE. I hardly think anyone would notice and I doubt that they use too many diodes to limit backflow, and even more doubtful that they check for such a thing. Besides, FM is so simple it will backflow down the ground sheilding. FM Modulators are fairly cheap, they're included in Car CD decks all the time. Ask your local radio shack for the highest wattage modulator they have. But cable FM is not as cool. People cant listen in their cars. :| |

ghaaaaaaaaaa.
this would be cool. we need pirate radio. i want to help. even though i would probably be useless. don't let this idea die. what if we got enough interested poeple together to contribute cash so that it wouldn't be quite as expensive for one person...??? |
