alternative music...

i don't really get it, what is it an alternative to? good music?

yeah i used to like this shit when i was 13 and didn't know any better, since then ive grown up and now i can barely stand it, there are some good alternative bands out there but most of it sounds like crap. i mean, you can't dance to it, the lyrics are usally retarded whiteboy/girl angst, most of the times the instruments sound like shit and are unharmonic...its not smooth and chill like some nice hip-hop RnB or jazz....i dunno, to me it just feels like white suburban angst music...now that this type of music has resurfaced in the mainstream again its getting even worse with formulatic trash like avril lavigne, blink 182, etc getting major airplay.

i dunno alternative is one of those few genres i don't like. i mean i like jazz, soul, hip hop, RnB(especialy that old school motown shit), 80's pop, classic rock, ragga, salsa, disco, bhangra, folk, jungle, breaks, house, techno, and even trance...but i don't like alternative

Sorry to burst your bubble friend but 'alternative' is a dead genre. It doesn't even exist anymore.

Alternative...... alternative to what? Back in the late 80's hair metal and good old fashioned rock and roll ruled the charts. That was considered the 'core' of rock music.

In 1991, a breakthrough was made in the modern rock scene. A band out of Seattle, Nirvana, released 'Nevermind' and it went to #1 on Billboard. This was the beginning of the short lived era of 'grunge'.

Now, grunge had been around for a while already but this was the first major label signing of what was to be known as an 'alternative' band. In 1989, Nirvana released 'Bleach' on Sub Pop records, which was a huge factor in the beginning of alternative. A man named David Geffen bought Sub Pop and pumped in the much needed funds to promote these underground bands to the public. Before Geffen came along though, Sub Pop was a huge marketer in the underground scene, signing bands that were to mold the future of rock music. Just a few of these bands were Mudhoney, Sunny Day Real Estate, Soundgarden, and Pigeonhed. Look them up if you want to hear what the beginning of our 'modern' rock sounded like.

As I said, alternative music had been around for a while in the form of bands like the revolting cocks, flaming lips, NIN, dinosaur jr, and many others. This was just the beginning of its journery into mainstream media.

When it was first introduced, this music was an alternative. It was an alternative to Bryan Adams, Motley Crue, Poison.... whoever was big at the time. As the years progressed though the rock scene completely changed. Grunge died a young 3 yr death and thus was born the next few years of alternative. As the years went by the bands of old weren't selling albums or selling out stadiums like they used to. They could barely fill small halls or clubs. Pearl Jam on the other hand could sell out stadiums in minutes and their albums would go 6 or 8 times platinum in less than a year.

As the rockers of old washed out their hairspray and gave up the make-up, alternative rock became the norm. Which brings me to my point..... almost all of todays modern rock would have been considered 'alternative' ten years ago. What had previously been an 'alternative' form of rock music, was now the number one form of rock music. Alternative then ceased to exist as it was no longer an alternative to anything, it was normal and it owned the rock charts.

When Nirvana made the first commercial success of 'alternative' music it brought forth a revitalization to the rock world that was badly needed. They pioneered the next generation of rock. There is obviously a reason that time and time again "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is chosen as the number one song of the 90's as Nirvana is quite often chosen as best band.

As I said, alternative is dead. Yes there are a lot of forms of music out there that are different but to try and pin a band as alternative nowadays isn't worth the time. Rock music as a whole is experiencing a resurgence right now that it hasn't seen since the early 90's. Record sales are back up and many rock artist are frequently seen in the top 100 on billboard charts. It's almost time for another 'pioneer' of rock music to come along and shake things up yet again. Who that'll be is beyond my knowledge, but it seems like trends last 10 - 15 yrs at most and our era of modern 'alternative' rock is almost at an end.

Some skater chicks are pretty hot, I don't mind any skater chick, but skater guys deserve beatdowns, most of em anyways, some of em are cool. Couldn't really fit in elswhere so alternative is an alternative to everything......fuckin skids!
