Setting up Turntables.... HELP!!
ok so I got my tables up and working, but not working well enough... the fucking records skip and I'm sure this is cause of how I've got the needle..
/me needs to read through the instruction manual when he get's home... but can anyone help me out with some recomendations? The cartridge way's 3.5g how much weight should have on top of the cartridge head... I got Technics Mk-3 tables... any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED!! |

I have MK3's myself but out of the box, both of those tables are DEFINITELY not calibrated. Although I am fairly new to the game, that is the first thing I knew need to be done for exactly the problems you are having... Kinda hard to explain via typing though, or maybe it's just cause I am to lazy... phone up a bud or somethin on the phone and ask as that would be easier.
Peace. |

here it goes
first the hard part... you gotta balance the catridges with the weight on the tone arm. once you've got them on the same weight, the instructions that come with your carts should say how much weight to put on the needles so reset the black dial on the counterweight to 0 then set the weight to the whatever the intructions say so... i have the stanton 520's and those are set on 3... but yeah once you've gone through that, your needles may still be skipping so get a record that doesnt mean anything to you, play it from start to finish, then backspin it through the entire duration of the record..... it should work into your needles and deck pretty good... if its still skipping, check that the record isnt warped or put more weight on the needles |

Method One
Stanton 500AL's: Mount the cartridge in the headshell pulled almost all the way to the front. Make sure it looks straight in relation to the headshell when you put it down on the record - readjust as necessary. Put the height ring at 2.5mm. For most purposes I reverse the weight on the tonearm, push it all the way forward and set the anti-skate to the max. If you try scratching and the needle jumps back a lot turn it down in 1/2-gram increments as necessary. Some may not like the reversal of the weight but unfortunately, the 500AL's need at least about 3 grams for scratching, and calibrating it the way you are supposed to get's you at most about 2.5 grams. Method Two Stanton 680 cartridges: Use the included weight that comes with the Technics head shells. Put a record on so you don't damage the needle, then swing it out over the record. Adjust the weight until it "floats" level above the record. Turn the weight indicator to "0". Now adjust the height until it is close to the surface of the record. This was 1.5 for me. Adjust the weight to 1.5 for just home listening, 3.5 for practicing and performance. Use an unpressed side of a 12" or a 12" with a large run- off to set the anti-skate. Put the needle on unpressed vinyl and adjust the skate (while spinning) so it stands still. On 1.5, it should be about 1.3. On 3.5, you can't adjust it high enough, so just crank it to the max. The consensus on anti-skate settings is to set it at 0 if you scratch mix or at a number equal to the weight on the cartridge if you just listen to your records without touching them... The idea is that the anti-skate mechanism in the turntable is designed for normal record playing. |

Ok I finally got it so it wouldn't skip or so I thought via my instructions and everything, I set everything up like the instructions told me too, but my head still skips back a line on the vinyl...
I'm trying to catch my first beat of a track by scratching through it back and forth and about every 5th time back my vinyl either goes back a line on the vinyl or forwards, should I just keep tweaking around with shit till I get it just right? What can I do.. I've got Techniques MK-3's and a Technique U-dj1200 cartridge which came free with my decks, anyone got any idea? |

okay, this is straight from the qbert video.
1. remove the counterweight from the end of the tonearm and flip it around, dont push it all the way tight though, the first click out from the pivot (about 1/4 inch) is where you want it to rest. 2. set your anti skating to zero. anti skating is the amount of pull that the tonearm has in a "backward" direction. 3. now you need to set your height. now this is a little tricky seeing as how every kind of cartridge is different. start at zero, put the needle on the record and get on eye level with the cartridge and the record. now move the height up slowly. the desired effect you are trying to achive is getting the flat part of the cartridge to be level with the vinyl. like i said, every cartridge is different. with ortofons the desired setting is at about 1 but with shures the desired setting is roughly around 3.5, so you are just going to have to see for yourself. 1. Level tone arm using the dial at the base of the tone arm
2. Set anti-skate to 0 3. Adjust cartridge so that it is flush with the head shell 4. Flip wieght around and push all the way on If all this don't work go buy some Shure M44's If you can find them. good and cheap and they last forever |
