agreed.. I find much of dillinjas tunes to follow this same pattern, and usually there isn't much contrast within the tunes themselves, they tend to be hard and fast, and thats about it.. but then every once and a while... and awesome tune emerges!!

i wouldnt say he follows the same pattern... he actually goes all over the place with structure... but his drum samples are DEFINETLY getting old... and his big basslines are getting very old too... he obviously keeps using them cuz they sound crazy on the valve system but hell every dillinja track u hear... u just KNOW its by him...

and for a producer, its always a risk to stray away from sounds that you are familiar with, and that have become who you are.
Usually a track that strays can only go two ways, it will really suck, or it will be an awesome track.. there usually aren't very many in between... |

His studio skills are unreal. He has become a bit more formulaic over the past few years, but technically he can't be touched. No one's tracks drop harder.
Probably has something to do with the fact that he mixes his tunes on a proper sound system, instead of studio monitors like most other producers. I like the fact that his tunes are a little cheeky too, he doesn't take himself too seriously like a lot of the uber-dark techstep dudes seem too. Shit like 'thugged out bitch' and 'twist 'em out', those are serious tunes but they're kinda silly too, like he's poking a bit of fun at the whole over-the-top hardassness of dnb. i dig it. |

^ heres something i've also been wondering about.... even though i love dillinjas tracks, whether his style is getting old or not... is technically advanced music always necessarily good music? this is something i've never really been able to answer and even now i'm still unable to come to a decision.
but overall i fully agree with everything you said. but as for his awesome studio skills, i respect it but sometimes i just wonder when hes gonna get bored of this style hes been putting out for the past 3-4 years =) this is debateable again and it would help to get a personal standpoint from him on this, but for a while now... i've noticed a very repetitive pattern in his tunes since he released the cybotron lp. and lauren, i'd have to disagree that tracks can only go two ways. theres tracks that suck which will not get any attention, tracks that just blow everyone away (anthem) and i'd say 50-60% of the tracks out there in any genre are in between. theres just so much music being produced and these in-between tracks are awesome dj tools if they are used right. diversity is very important for the survival and development for a young genre like drumnbass (in my opinion =) if you disagree please say so) and without the in between experimental tracks, we have a very dim and boring genre. i can go on forever about this but this is a whole new topic =) |

Of course, just because a track is technically very well produced doesn't alone make it a good track. That's how i feel about a lot of stuff I hear from the likes of Kemal, Synthetix, etc: it's technically perfect, but often lacks the soul or human element that really makes a great tune (for me). That's one thing I appreciate about Dilly, his music doesn't sound like it was made by robots from the future. It's party music, sound system music, decended directly from Jamaican dub culture. And while his tracks do seem kind of samey a lot of the time, i'd just chalk that up to him having the most recognisable signature sound in the biz, and being a very prolific producer. Lots of other producers are just as guilty of milking one style for a long time, their tunes just don't stand out from the pack as much as Dilly's do.
Plus, if you look back over his whole career, you'll see that he's played around with some pretty diverse styles. ie: DJ Krush & CL Smooth- Only The Strong Survive (Dillinja Rmx) - i'd love to hear him produce more hip hop tracks, cause that one is straight up ILL! the stuff kemals been putting out i've definetly been having a hard time appreciating .... its way way too technically ahead to the point it sounds like a computer singing... dillys stuff sounds VERY real in my opinion.... but in a VERY hard way that gets very annoying in high doses =p hehehe but thats just me =)
and dillys music is ONLY party music... its very annoying to listen to his stuff at home unless you've experienced it on a big sound system... and wow his stuff sounds unreal on a seriously high end sound system.... reminds me of when i heard the 3rd remix of nasty ways at this little club called zen in sydney.... now i've NEVER been to any party or club where the volume was THIS loud. it just sounded fuckin UNREAL! his stuff sounds better the louder it is. this was for bad company and damn i remember i left the next morning back to vancouver and my ears were stil ringing 3-4 days after i came back... heheh definetly didnt do me any good =p but whatever that was one fuckin wild trip! hehheh awesome times =) anybody thinking about going somewhere goto australia... werd... |

k-pryde="but his drum samples are DEFINETLY getting old... and his big basslines are getting very old too..."
no-one, but NO-ONE makes bass sounds like Dillinja... i agree with wood, dillinja's stuff has a lot of elements that remind me of dub or reggae...... as for the super technical stuff.....i've never been a fan of songs that sound like robots fencing with vaccum cleaners. |

^^^^the bra jokes will kill you.
Yeah, i miss the system at Zen. Not the best to play on but great if you're on the other side of the decks. Well, maybe not the safest.........the last party i played there was shut down as a crime scene 1/2 way thru my set because some guy got glassed in the throat on the dancefloor. I miss violent jungle shows. Last edited by Mechwarrior; Nov 06, 02 at 07:22 PM. |

i swear the zen sound system did some serious damage. we were RIGHT in front of the decks and the monitors were SO FUCKIN LOUD! but i was fully hosed so i was loving it... sometimes wondered how long it would take d bridge and maldini to go deaf... hehe
but glassed in the throat? they musta been angry or bored since you spin like shit hahaha j.k but thats crazy.... i hate it when that kinda shit happens at parties |
