The Dutch trancemeister, real name Tijs Verwest, is the first non-British DJ to receive the prestigious accolade. Tiesto pipped the winners of the last two years' polls, progressive dons John Digweed and Sasha, to the number one slot after a record-breaking number of votes. His victory crowns a good year for trance, with fellow Dutchmen Ferry Corsten and Armin Van Buuren also leaping into the top ten. Continued high placings for Paul van Dyk (no. 4), Paul Oakenfold (6), a high climb for John '00' Fleming (up to 34), and high new entries for Johan Gielen (50) and Scot Project from Germany (43) indicate that trance - after a humungous backlash following its cheesy Euro-commercialisation - is well and truly back. "I'm not afraid to call myself trance," Tiesto told DJmag. "I consider myself an ambassador for trance, a DJ who proves that the music can still be innovative and uplifting without being cheesy." With Tenaglia sliding, no Americans feature in the Top 10, although a fifth of the 100 are from the North American continent. But it's the 'newer' territories for dance music that have thrown up some surprises. South America's premier DJs - Hernan Cattaneo from Argentina and Marky from Brazil - have had incredibly good years, reflected in their impressive poll showings. And techno whizzkid Umek from Slovenia has blasted into the chart, trailblazing the expansion of the East European dance scene in recent times. There are19 new entries, 5 re-entries and 5 non-movers this time around. Ex-pat Japanese tribalist New Yorker Satoshi Tomiie is the highest new entry, in at No. 30, closely followed by bright young Brits Eddie Halliwell and James Zabiela. The Top 100 vote was 20% up on 2001's, with dance music fans from 65 different countries worldwide voting for their fave jocks globally.
