Playing a track more than once in a set or mix cd
i did this once in a mix of mine, i began the cd with the breakdown of the track and built it into the next track of the cd, then i played the vocal line from the track during the fade out of my final track.... haha.... and a certain promoter, after listening to it, gave me shit for sampling a song twice on the cd, telling me i didnt know what i was doing...
BUT, i heard dj antoine play the same track twice during his set, granted it was a sick ass track and he had the crowd in the palm of his hand, then on his new cd he plays two slightly different mixes of a track (different then at simple) on either ends of the mix. thoughts? |

Matty and Dabbler do it all the time with the new jams that they gots... i remember hearing matty playing Shy FX Shake it twice at a twisted party at plaza last year... I think drumnbass djs do this lots..Flip the regular remix for half the track and then flip the remix later on.. works pretty sick

Who gave you shit? It wasnt me! I dont see anything wrong with it if it isnt that noticeable! I think its funny that the promoter said something. When I was playing hip hop @ Bar None, the promoter got mad cause I played that new eminem song, he thought it was too rowdy, but now I always hear it @ hip hop clubs.

haha, yah i know it wasnt you kev =)
yah, if it works with your set and the flow you have going on, and if you do it creatively then i think its totally cool. yah, i remember matty and dabbler (?) at twisted or maybe imix last spring playing shake your body a couple times, ppl went off! |

heres my 2 cents.
its your cd. its a reflection of how you would play (i hope). Do what you want on your cd, if there was some sort fo "dj rulebook" to follow everyone would sound like everybody else, blah blah blah. do what you like. besides, what does some promoter know about what constitutes a good cd? he's or she is just another person with an opinion, nothing more. being a promoter doesnt make you a musical god....although...well...I wont go in to that. word. |

I think theres nothing wrong with it if u do it in the right way(ie previewing the song for a bit like right before u mix it or a few tracks back or playing a small portion of the track later...) but i dont think playing a track to its full length twice is too good, in fact its pretty lame (especially if youre playing an anthem twice). I dont think theres anything wrong as long with playing a track twice as it has a purpose. The way you described it sounds pretty sweet actually. And playing two different versions fo a song is pretty sweet, especially if done back to back I see it all time(I think DJ Dan did it in one of his CDs?)

I see no problem with it personally. On the Sasha & Digweed essential mix from earlier this year, each of them played the Timo Maas remix of We R all made of stars in their respective hours. If they can do it, so can you =P
I doubt I would personally do it because I usually have about 30 tracks I want to put in each of my demos, and as a result have to cut a lot of em. What you did sounds perfectly reasonable though, tell the promoter he's a retard. |

throwing in tease mixes is something i personally like to do alot. i know i'm guity of this but sometimes i find it pretty annoying when djs do a really long tease by layering the tracks for a while, then cutting back into the original track when you think the break of the next track being mixed into will come in.... cuz then you have to endure another long wait for the next track to be mixed into.... this is only if it is done to excess.... cuz theres only so much teasing one can endure =)
but if it works well then hey good music is good music. |

this reminds of one time i saw carl cox live....he dropped stardusts - music sounds better than you, maybe 15 times over 2 hours? but never by itself, it was always layered and something was always different about it.
and i still think promoters suck. |

yah the way you did it the promoter doesnt even have an argument.
even if it was a vocal loop you kept sampling repeatedly that could be very cool too.. as long as it wasnt too extensive that being said obviously u dont want to be dropping the same breakdown twice on a short cd mix. :D |
