I disagree, Jim was an awesome guy. He also ordered me every record. Service was great and the prices were outstanding. Now it looks like im going to be switching to serato. |

Almost every record store that has tried to go up after boom town or beat street has had to close down after a year or two. I think with mp3s and serato on the way it only made it harder for them to maintain business. I use to love virgin records especially for finding mainstream tracks on vinyl for cheep. This got me really excited about Remix when I heard it opened and it was the same guy who ordered. However with mp3s selling mainstream tracks for $2 each... it didn't make any sense for me to goto Remix anymore :(
The service was great and the shop was really well kept. Im sorry to see it go. |

i think that more had to do with jim being kind of awkward.

that could be the reason right there
they ain't priced that way cause we're gouging you, it's because records are expensive & even more expensive to ship... you of all people should know that mike |

i know why they have to be the prices they are -- to an extent. i've just started buying mp3's because of the cost & jim had the only store in town that i found the records to still be @ decent price. honestly, sherwood, some of your double pack prices starting getting out of control, that's one of the main reasons i stopped picking up vinyl @ boomtown. $32.99 + tax for a double pack is outrageous (especially when a friend ordered the same double pack from a store in T.O. & payed $26.99). and, as you know, i pretty intimate with how the pricing gets set.

Shiz !
It really does suck that Remix went out of buisness Jim always went the extra mile to get me the wax I asked for, unfortunately now with his buisness gone under I've found that the best place to get wax is Junorecords.co.uk takes 4 -10 days for your arrivals to get to your location and costs the same, roughly $20.00 a vinyl.

anyways, it dosen't really phaze me... take a peek at the list as long as my arm of flash-in-the-pan record shops we've outlasted & tell me who knows what they're doing. btw, you stopped buying vinyl from us because our double packs went up a couple bucks, even though the singles have stayed the same price for years? weak dude - weak. Truth hurts. I shopped there a couple times. (when i still played vinyl that is) good prices, not the greatest in selection, and vibe def not there. No joking around with this guy. No matter how many times i tried. Plus his location was totally hidden, no one knew about it. And his prices (although great for us) were too low to keep rent. Besides, digital is totally taking over. Why anyone would just now open a record store makes no sense to me. He should open a dl site instead. Make more money that way. I'm not surprised at all. It was a good run while it lasted. |

^ i always understood that there was some link with Virgin that allowed him to get the imports for really cheap. but yeah, even if that was the case there's no way you could make rent on Granville st. with an inventory that small. it is too bad in a way because it was good for us having another shop near the west end... but i'm not surprised either that it didn't work out.

I still see Vinyls sticking around well into the next 10 years. Digital naysayers have been screaming the vinyl is on the way out for a damn near decade now. But yet at every club in town you'll still see a pair of tech 12s.
I have many of my own reasons to stick with vinyl. #1 being I just get a jazz every time someone who's new to clubs/raves/djing and sees someone spinning records and thinks "Huh. Didn't know they still made those." |

this just in:
the owner of Remix just posted on MySpace and also notified the Remix mailing list that he has found a new location and will be re-opening soon. Details to come. (new location = cheaper rent, so he can keep the low prices... ). Or so I read :-) -f. Last edited by ffa; Apr 15, 07 at 07:28 PM. |

weird..... guess he may have refocus'd his business decisions and all and realized the mistakes and is giving a shot again. Or probably teaming up with a business partner..... In any case if this information is infact true I am a happy camper. At least I know a shop is always available and around town to browse and buy when I'm in the city... |

/\ rent on Granville was too high, and he was not going to raise his prices (it was against his whole philosophy of opening that store in the first place...). So I believe that since there is still demand for cheap records, he has found a new place with less overhead so he can continue to supply the demand.
As for Jim being unfriendly: it is, as Mike said, his awkwardness more than him not being friendly. He is actually a very nice guy. He is just a little odd... a wierd music geek I suppose. And I have to agree with some posters: if you want the latest records in specialty micro-genres, this was not the place to go. On the other hand, if you want the latest records in the more popular categories, Remix always had them in stock. I found it great for the more trendy genres (elecro, minimal) and also for the Indie stuff and also re-presses, and special orders. Remix used to get consistent shipments like any other store, once a week. But recently, due to financial troubles, the orders were getting less consistent. For me, I still love vinyl. Sure I discovered MP3s like 10 years ago, and used to burn them and play, etc... but I love the feel and sound of vinyl, and let's face it, I am a music COLLECTOR more so than I am a DJ.... so I love collecting music, and the best way to collect is vinyl. And I don't play those records that are not worth keeping, so I don't have that problem that some people have (i.e. constantly buying random filler records so they keep up with the Joneses and not being able to afford such records on vinyl). I do admit that I have bought stuff in my collection that I now look at and go "why the heck did I buy this", but the majority of my records are tracks I want to keep. And that reflects in the music that I play when I DJ as well... Anyhow.... -f. Last edited by ffa; Apr 15, 07 at 07:37 PM. |
