Need to book some of these guys!

I sure hope someone looks into booking some other breaks acts from overseas. I'm all for the Breakfastaz, Aquasky, Freestylers, etc etc. However, there are other producers who are coming on hard and fast. Someone should book Dopamine, Diverted, Klaus "Heavyweight" Hill, Vandal, Far too Loud...people like that as their genre is taking off all over. Dopamine told me him and KHH are planning a North American tour as we speak, I sure hope they hit up Van. Also, why the hell did no one go to the Rogue Element set at Cyber? Anyone who knows breaks should know how truely talented this guy is. I was sorely disappointed at the turnout, and even a little embarrassed. I still had a great time though, cuz this guy is just too good to let something like that prevent me from enjoying his set. I just hope he isn't discouraged from coming back here, as that would be a reall shame. Maybe if he could get booked for an actual massive so everyone can see what he can really do. Just a thought.

Do you know why promoters are only booking acts like Krafty, Breakfastaz, Freestylers, etc?

It's because anytime anyone takes a risk in this city, no one supports. The experienced promoters are probably sick of losing out on money and will only go for the sure-thing. Not enough new kids are stepping up to take the risk and those that do either don't really have the promotional chops to get these risky shows off the ground or are stuck with shitty venues or days of the week.

The entire electronic music scene here in Vancouver is at a bit of a crossroads as there's really just not enough new people getting into the music to take over for the 90s ravers who are now pushing 30 and not really willing to go out all the time and will only go for some of the big acts that come through town.

I agree

Yeah I see what you're saying and I totally agree. It's just so frustrating cuz there are some seriously talented producers out there. Maybe I should move to the UK...

Here's an idea

I just thought of something. The reason why there are few promoters that are willing to risk getting new talent to come here is obviously the lack of peoples' exposure to those talents. The love of the genre is there but the lack of exposure holds it back. So, what a promoter should do is maybe get a DJ to do a demo set made up of all tracks of any given producer, make like a hundred copies and just give them out with a flyer for the event. If you give these out to people with connections, it not only gets the word out about the event but also exposes them ahead of time as to what they are going to see....

I dunno, I'm not a producer but it seems like an alright plan. Too much effort required though...?

As for Mateo's response, I agree with you 100%. However when Rogue Element came it was on a Friday so no excuses!

frankly, as one of the over-30 90's ravers if I'm not already going out to the club, there's no way a DJ set is going to get me out anymore.

Bring some live acts, and you'll see me out. I can see world-class DJing in probably 20 friends' living rooms any weekend of the year. The beer and scotch are way cheaper, I don't have to worry about my bike getting stolen, and I don't have to put up with some steroid monkey five years younger than me gruffly demanding two peices of ID.

there are some fantastic live acts out there, but 90% of the time DJing just isn't that impressive anymore. I'd rather see some local livepa I've never heard of than some expensive UK DJ I've never heard of, any day of the week.

Mux, you sound like you've lost faith in the music. I can't think of a better experience of not only hearing a track or tracks of a producer whom I respect, but to actually hear it spun by them right in front of me is above and beyond even that. To put it in your perspective, it's like seeing a coverband play your favorite tune vs. actually seeing the real thing.

As for Soma's response......uuhhhh Yeah!

Sillyist, maybe take all this as some kind of sign, maybe you should look into throwing an event and bringing in some of these people you keep talking about!

Its not easy, trust me. Im trying to get the ball rolling on some things. And doing it for the first time on my own independantly (and when not to many expierenced people care to share their knowledge :S) it gets a little trickey.

But if your motivated enough, you should be able to bring in someone.

Do It Up
Get Er Done!

Dude,

thats the worst comparison ever!

Cover bands can be really good! Unless the dj is playing a bunch of re-edits or doing some live remix there is absolutely no difference in him playing the jam or dj so and so playing it.

I agree Mateo, cover bands can be really "good". "Good" being the key word. It's greatness that I truely appreciate. Greatness comes from being creative, being an innovator. When I hear a producer lay down a track that I know came from his/her mind only I get way more jacked up than when I hear someone else play it. It's just the way it is. It's about respect and showing that you are thankful for them continuing to rock out phat shit! Cuz if you don't show appreciation then you won't be able to hear even a "coverband" play anything because the true creators won't be making anything for them to cover. Support the music but also support those who create it.

honestly tho - 90% of big name EDM djs are either boring DJs or just plain bad. Most of our locals here are 10x the DJs that most of these big name acts are.

That's why I prefer watching hip hop DJs spin to most EDM guys nowadays. At least they're actually doing something behind the decks that takes some real skill.

btw, Mux has been reppin' techno around the world for longer than I can remember - I don't think he's lost much faith in the music :).

But in the end, it's just a guy spinning records. Like Mux said, if I really want to hear world class mixing, I call up a buddy. I wholeheartedly agree on the Live PA front. Man... it's so much different to hear someone CREATE electronic music as opposed to just pushing a play button and changing the pitch.

Although, you are right on one thing... the scene down there needs some new, young blood who aren't afraid to do something different.

Yeah Soo but then you have to listen to Hip Hop... ;) one thing that people forget though is a lot of producers play new shit that is yet to even be released, which is another reason why I will go see their set. And I've yet to see a "bad" set from any of the big players.

But seriously, most DJs have nothing on a talented hip-hop DJ. What I wouldn't give to be able to cut funk up like that.
