Nov 3rd. WHITEY (DIM MAK / UK) @ ROYAL UNICORN CABARET
This might be a DJ set instead of a live show and if so, i'm disappointed. I saw Whitey at media club a while back. Good show. One of my favorite "indie" bands. Synth city. Whitey & Rory "Trash" Phillips - Present a DJ/Live Hybrid Mini Tour ***Limited Venue Capacity 150 Presale tickets go on sale Friday, October 19th at Livestock (239 Abbott), Zulu (1972 West 4th Ave) and Vancouver male Online - pauldevro. Whitey (DimMak / Kitsune) Your attention please. Whitey is a sort-of solo project by N.J Whitey. He is a bit of a misanthrope that spends most of his time skulking in dark corners. He collects books, grudges and enemies. He has to date recorded and released one album THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL IS A TRAIN (1234 Records). This made many critical 'Best Of Year' lists. You should listen to this, if you can find it. If you are in America then you can buy it from DimMak, or from Itunes. Whitey has just completed another album. pony up! With no two songs sounding the same and incorporating the best of rock, electro and folk sounds Whitey plans on re-introducing America to good dance and chill shounds again. I'll leave it to legendary UK music magazine Q to have the last word on Whitey, "A superb debut, insidious buzzing grooves and fragile deamy tunes" Rory Phillips (T.R.A.S.H. / Durr) Best known for his sets alongside Erol Alkan at London's premier tastemaking nightspot Trash (R.I.P), his mutant disco workouts at East London's Our Disco and his main room slot at Trash's successor Durrr, Rory Phillips' unique style of awkward dance, forgotten post-punk classics and electronic oddities has seen him play to crowds all across Europe, Asia and the USA, play alongside the likes of 2ManyDJs, Optimo, The DFA and Justice, record a DJ session for the John Peel Show and more recently be hand-picked to produce remixes for the likes Of Montreal, Franz Ferdinand, Chromeo and Robyn w/ Kleerup's recent UK Number 1, 'With Every Heartbeat'. ---------- "Let me say this now, so that there are no mistakes. Rory Phillips' party is the best party in the world." - James Murphy ( LCD Soundsystem / DFA Records ) ---------- Whitey (Dim Mak / UK) & Rory Phillips (T.R.A.S.H. / DURR), Vancouver BC, Saturday, November 03, 2007, Royal Unicorn Cabaret |

it was fuckin' rad. I've had more sex to Whitey than any other music, so i just had a giant stiffy recalling all my good times.
Whitey looked like he did too many bangers mid show and Rory Phillips did most of the work from then on. Rory had a bunch of the guitar riffs from Whiteys band programmed into a drum machine and was creating hard bass heavy loops and whitey was providing subtle emphasis with vocals and playing with a drum machine or synth himself. Quite a unique show. Rory played some non-whitey stuff while whitey fucked off to powder his nose and i just waited that shit out until they got back into the good stuff. Couldn't be beat for $10. About what i paid to see him at the media club, but there it was the full band and no DJ shit. |

i'm pretty sure i got blacklisted from hipster shows after this one.
Lessons learned: 1. don't toss one of the promoters/djs to the floor in a moshpit he's created...no matter how much of an idiot he's being 2. don't allow your friend to call him a douche, especially not when you are talking to his groupies 3. don't allow said promoter/dj to take a picture of your face at point blank range I'm either blacklisted, there are horrible photochops getting created of me right now or i'm just paranoid. I'm hoping for the 2nd option. |
