Salbourg? iPOD DJ's?
Read this;
DISCORDER iPod DJs "We’ve long said that the age of the superstar DJ died in the 90s." "With their unprecedented portability, MP3 players allow you to throw a party anywhere. Aside from clubs and house parties, Volk has DJed a skytrain party using two MP3 players and a ghetto blaster. He also knows people planning a ’porta–party,’ using MP3 players, a local FM transmitter, and carloads of people roaming the city." "It’s part of the larger DIY trend,” says Andrew Andrew. “If I’m DJ–ing with an iPod, and you’re in the crowd with an iPod, then you could be the DJ too." Salbourg at the Royal Unicorn Cabaret 147 E. Louis Logic also playd his show with an iPod cuz his DJ didn't come.....but it wasn't like he was trying to be a DJ....he'd talk in between songs then hit the next track
there are CDJ-like devices that you plug an iPod into and mix with like any other turntable.....but if you're just using an ipod to change songs and aren't actually mixing anything then that's not exactly DJing |

That's just what I'm curious about. I want to go see some of these iPod DJ's in action and see for myself. I guess you can't stop progress, but the first impression I had in my mind when I heard this was people hooking to iPod's up to a mixer and just hitting 'next track' or whatever.

dj'ing with a ipod makes toatal sense. your entire music collection in the palm of your hand patched into your interface and off you go... why?.... whats wrong with it? |
|
|||
^there's no mention of an interface, these ppl are just plugging their ipod into a mixer..
i read the article, wow... they're touting the ipod as the DJing medium of the future basically... i wonder if the author has heard of serato scratch? ed- that article is 3 years old, but still... |

I'm guessing the author saw the pics of Hawtin playing on that first-gen Numark iPod mixer and decided that he knew exactly where DJing was going at that point.
Course, back then the mixers had no pitch control and Hawtin was basically just playing his own loops IIRC. |

i thought hawtin was playing the ipod's without the numark ipod dj base. I think he was playing on a vestax. |

just looking at the numark website, with the original IPod dj thing.. There was no pitch control, so you had to be on the same bpm at all times.
Now with the ipod2 dj thing, it show's there's a pitch control but how the shit are you supposed to play two seperate tracks with an ipod? there's no possible way and there's only 1 docking station. If there is a way.. then hell yea, go for it! I personally would never use one because I love the feel of vinyl (torq) When you're behind the decks, it doesnt matter what you use as long as the crowd loves it. except if you use that automatic dj mix program where you cue two files up and it pitches automatically, that's pretty gay and take a lot of fun out of djing. But, if i saw a dj use the ipod station.. i'd probably snicker a little. |

the quality expectation of DJing has gone downhill enough that we don't need some kids playing their 128k files off a single ipod and calling themselves a "dj" further diluting the term.
Shit like this ranks up there with c-level celebrities getting bookings as "djs" cause it's the in thing to do or aging rock stars playing pre-mixed CDs while flailing around behind the decks pretending to mix. Sure at the end of the day, all most DJs do is play other people's music, but I would like to believe there is still an artform to mixing/programming as set/performing and the more these fools try to promote the "anyone can do it" mentality, the more lindsay lohan's of the world will begin to take over the scene with their non-existent skills.
