After the success of ‘The Underground 2008’ comes a three-disc digi-pack collection of tracks that will be doing the rounds at the famous Miami Winter Music Conference this year. ‘Underground Miami’ features the records hitting up the underground floors at the moment that are destined to be the big hitters throughout the summer season in Miami and beyond.

The ‘Underground Miami’ tracklist reads like a who’s who of quality house and techno, including tracks and remixes from the likes of Lutzenkirchen, Hervé, Paul Woolford, Zoo Brazil, Cobblestone Jazz, Sasha, Steve Bug and many more…

I guess the term 'underground' is subjective? These tracks might not be underground to you but probably would be to a lot of people.

An interesting way of looking at it.

Just because some people wouldn't know about it does it become underground? For example, my brother considers Scooter, and Paul Okenfold to be "undergound techno", but has a fairly good knowledge of "undergound indie bands".

Is what is underground defined by an individual, society, or something else?

Let us jack this thread to discuss it, since in the week this has been posted the only reply was to mock it.

I think underground is anything that doesn't get airplay on a major medium. (ie. prominent radio, television, mainstream magazines, etc)

Old tracks do not fall into this category once they fall out of rotation, however.

I'd disagree, for example Death Cab for Cutie, I think would be a stretch to consider that underground. But in Vancouver they aren't on the radio or television.

Although that could just be because of the limited choices in Vancouver media.

Well that raises the question of whether underground is on a local, national, or global scale.

Ignoring, of course, the entire first season of The OC.

Or you're just not paying attention. Death Cab and Postal Service both got regular airplay on both The Fox and 91.3 (Victoria) about 3 years ago, so I dunno what you're talking about...

Then again, The Zone in Vic has a pretty good history of playing underground indie rock. But Death Cab is a horrible example.

Granted Death Cab isn't the best example, but the idea is the same, and could be put forward to several other musical acts/movies.

Pryda being number one jumping out to me from that disc cover.

Hardly underground, but you wouldn't really know that unless you listen to BBC Radio 1.

Pryda tends to be regarded as the 'underground' version of Prydz. If you're comparing it to the stuff released under his real name (Call On Me, Proper Education), I'd be inclined to agree.

Eh, there is no "underground" version of Prydz. Pryda is just as popular as Call On Me was three years ago it seems and I find myself just as bored of it as I was of his previous projects about two weeks into them.

I didn't say Pryda "is" the "underground" version Prydz, I said it's "regarded" as the "underground" version of Prydz. That's why Prydz ends up on MoS:Annual, and Pryda ends up on MoS: Underground.

Of course, compared to something like Flowjob, they're both "atmospheric".

(a few more """"""""... I think I had some left over...:S)

Hmmm interesting debate here, I reckon to your Average Joe in the street Pryda is underground but if you're a big househead he's maybe not because of his overground productions as Eric Prydz.
