Audigy2 Platinum eX
Anybody have any feedback about this card?
It's pretty but does it live up to the test? http://www.soundblaster.com/products...2_platinum_ex/ |

the new audigy2 chips are nice, but:
1) eX just isn't where it's at. get the regular model. you'll save money and space. besides, what else are you gonna do with the spare 5.25 bays that everyone has had since combo drives came out? 2) M-Audio - formerly Midiman - still makes better cards. the amount of bang (relative to buck) that you'll get out of an Audiophile is mighty high. if you're into a higher range, M-Audio's more badass cards will serve you better than an Audigy if you've got the cash for them. also, if you're looking for a more hardcore setup than your average 1 mic/1 line home recording rig, check out M-Audio's multi i/o cards - namely the 10 in 10 out - they're crazy go goddamn nuts. |

1010 and the 1010-LT have midi, as well as a metric assload of other connections.
according to their site... ok nevermind that's too much to paste. just go there: http://m-audio.com/products/m-audio/1010lt.php edit: note that M-Audio is leet and serves web pages with PHP. this further proves how cool their shit is. |

Okay, the person to talk to is Cyberdog cause he's the Creative Labs sales rep for western Canada (or something like that). From person experience I find that the Sound Blaster products tend to be more about features than quality, however I've never handled anything since the Live! Also, Cyberdog may even be nice enough to give you a demo of the latest line of Sound Blaster cards cause he only lives like 5 minutes away from you, Lex.

Jonesie is (semi) correct - not quite a sales rep in that I don't fill orders, more of a marketing rep, giving CL info to the retail channel and letting CL know what the 'word on the street' is.
I'll keep this short cuz I don't want to use the board as unpaid advertising - but if you or anyone else wants to PM me for more info or a specific question or something feel free. Baiscally, like anything else, the main question is why are you looking towards getting it; how do you intend to use it. Generally I consider our products to be consumer to entry level hobbyist/pro-sumer level. If you're just starting to explore music creation then it can be a good way to keep costs down as you get your feet wet. If you're at more of a professional level then you're likely justified in spending bigger dollars on more exacting and featured equipment. I also generally agree with dfltr in the sense that unless there is a specific reason for external, go with the internal model. It's cheaper (don't have to surround the breakout box with protective casing in case its dropped), takes up less space, and, there's no risk of it dropping on the floor...having the cable which connects it to the card getting eaten by the cat/dog...one less thing to spill coffe or OJ on...etc. Beyond that, like I said, drop me a line if you have a specific question or need more info. |
