these are just what i get out of the breaks, so to each their own opinion of the sounds, i won't argue if i'm wrong about anything, because i'm not wrong when i do my research (read : if i like the shit)
funky breaks are sample ridden (though somtimes live instrumentation is sampled) and contain various synths and grooving beats. a bassy kick is always a plus. eg. old icey, fixx, huda hudia, tony faline, C-TO-THE-I-N-T-TO-THE-IZZ-O (CINTO)
new school is darker, it has gritty filtered basslines and tends to steer towards a kind of mechanical sound. the underlying beats are similar to those of funky breaks they just use different drums and the pattern changes a little bit more. eg. old rennie p., koma n bones, HVB... (this isn't really my genre so don't attack me boys...)
big beat is circus music (haha, just kidding guys, but you have to admit it was funny) it contains really funky live-sounding shit. lots of it. completely exploited by fatboy slim but alot of old freskanova shit is good ass big beat. old freestylers, agent sumo, bowser, psychadelia smith, some old rhetoric and caged stuff borders on big beat, and im sure there is a lot of new stuff out there...
intelligent breaks are deeper florida stuff that revolves alot more around the synths and builds than samples. more like songs... jasp 182, merlyn, some rick west stuff (at leat on his cds) but these guys make progressive breaks too...
progressive breaks are just like every other progressive music, except with a breakbeat, if you want a description, ask somebody who cares (hehehehehehehehehe)
