Your 5 Most Influential Albums
As I finished cataloging my music collection a little while ago, I discovered that, if I listened to one album a day, it'd take me more than a year to go through my entire library. Definitely a fair share of audio delights but it got me wondering just a little; where did it all exactly come from over the years? Which forms of music influenced me the most to collect all that I now own?
Not to be confused with your 5 favorite albums (as we undoubtedly come across those later in life as we start down a certain musical road), I'm curious as to what albums have influenced your current musical tastes the most. And, just so you don't feel left out, I'll go first ~_o. 1. The Police - Ghost In The Machine My dad had the vinyl of this and I remember listening to it as a toddler for countless days at a time. My affinity towards music is undoubtedly stemmed from these very early listening sessions as I'd sometimes even curl up in a little ball, falling asleep while listening to this album with headphones on my tiny ears. Probably served as better lullaby music to my infant ears than any Raffi song. 2. 2 Unlimited - No Limits A very obvious choice for me, as this was my first ever personal album. I'd been aware of dance music for a little while and enjoyed all of the crazy synth sounds coming from it. 2 Unlimited's work, with its crossover appeal and memorable riffs during those years, hooked me in instantly. 3. Trance Europe 2.0 For a few years my electronic musical taste remained firmly in the commercial side of things. However, by the mid-90's, the sound was growing tiresome and watered down, increasingly boring compared to the more innovative sounds of a few years back. I was aware of some more underground elements, even had a couple of compilations of very early rave hits, but this album in particular set things in motion for my eventual turn towards the undergound sounds of dance music. With dark pads, quick beats, and sinister samples arranged in ways I'd never knew could exist (plus not to mention very tongue-in-check cover art) I abandonned my commercial roots and never looked back. 4. One A.D. Every so often an album comes along which features a slew of artists you've never heard of before and, by the time you finish listening to it, you end up frantically searching out every single bit of material of theirs out there. This compilation of mid-90's ambient dub from Waveform Records accomplished this. Before I heard this album, I never heard of artists like Banco de Gaia, The Higher Intelligence Agency, or A Positive Life. I couldn't imagine my collection being complete without these artists today. 5. The RZA Hits I had a passing interest in hip hop for a while but never enough to actively seek out the material for myself. That is, until I heard this album and discovered just how innovative it could actually be. I've come across some impeccable hip hop since but I'd probably never have grown to appreciate the way I do today had this album never gotten the ball rolling. |

Rage Against the Machine - Battle of Los Angeles I have many more in my collection that have changed my life, my perception of life, and my being. These are just the top of the list. |

Heh... worry not. 5's just an arbitory number that's easiest to use. Besides, if I didn't try to limit myself, my list would would a bit too long... :soak: On another note, I take back an earlier statement on this thread of mine. Responses have been sluggish but steady so props out there. :keebler: |
