that said.... there is STILL so much good breaks out there that no one goes after. one example is SKIP EZ. he has THE sickest breaks tracks. but i really dont hear anyone play the same shit he plays. if you take a chance and go with stuff that might be a little more tekky and out there, you could find alot of cool music that would rock a party. that said... im not bashing anyones style! keep doing and spinning what you love! =) thats what matters! |

^ Ok favs hey.....hmmmm
The EVERYTHING Genre (which no one seems to have focused on): 2 DJs come to mind when it comes to playing everything and thats the man with the deepest crates in the city Vinyl Ritchie and the man with the most skills on the decks Mat (he spells it with one T people!) The Alien.... These 2 can play whatever the fuck you want.... I've heard Scotty (Vinyl) mix Grateful Dead with DnB.... and Mat will show you all the latest DMC scratches while mixin' every genre perfectly together.... these 2 may just be the 2 best DJs in CANADA!.... Honourble mention for this category goes to the Old Man - Czech (I'll touch on him in the breaks....) Breaks: Ok Kiddies listen up! ANDREW SPENCE aka (for all the old skoolers out there) DJ SLIM (the original Slim...not the dude on the beat)..... Andrew is hands down the best breaks DJ in Canada. YOU WILL NEVER HEAR HIM BOTCH A MIX..... NEVER.... ask any of the top DJs for breaks in Canada whos the best, and I bet they all say Andrew.... or Czech..... can't deny it.... I remember growing up in Toronto and going to raves in 94'/ 95' waiting to hear him play.... he's stood the test of time and is still every kiddies favorite... plus he's a tight bro who has influenced me to push breaks to the next level. Drum n' Bass: Mat The Alien, Matty, Dabbler, Jaime (Jungle Souldier), Wood, Jay Auto, Andrew Spence (he plays dnb too), Bill Masters (I loved him when he lived here), ..... theres a lot of good dn'b DJs.... I think you could put almost all the citys dnb DJs in this one. House: Deepen Residents.... Jay Tripwire, Vernon, and Tyler T-Bone .... 2 of the citys world travelers Jay and Tyler and the man (Vern) who holds down the night and the label. Progressive: Nicky Delgado and Mirka.... not a huge fan of the prog, but I've heard these 2 a few times and enjoyed what I've heard. Hip Hop: WHOA this is tough..... Well Mat The Alien is the best, but he plays all over the board.... Kilo Cee is a Old Skool fav.... Shortfuse (the original Jelo) is a mad man on the decks.... Marlin is a relativly unknown Hip Hop Dj from the Sunshine Coast, he's dope and is a young jedi in the studio. Lastly for staright DMC skills it's all about G-Nius. my 2 cents Soda |

Fave Locals.........
Techno: Nemo, Son of Jacob D&B: Wood hands down........he playes happy D&B that even a trance/techno/prog head like me can groove to Jungle: Well as a truely undereducated trance afficianado I am going to go with Dabbler. He played the first jungle track I ever loved "Ready or not" Fugees (Aphrodite remix) Really opened my eyes and ears and exposed me to the dark side..... House: Tripwire. He killed it at the danny howells show and anyone who does live PA and produces (and I am not talking rip off bootlegs either).....this guy is the real deal.......gets two thumbs up from me Progressive: Johnny Fever for musical selection, Julian for technical ability Trance: hmm this is tough because I am such a critic, but I gotta say Rosco P for musical selection as for technical ability I haven't heard any trance DJ's in van for awhile so I am not at liberty to judge........I need to go to viva one of these fridays and check out the viva night BreaKZ......Hee hee hee this is where I have some fun. Personally I like to shake my ass, and to do this I need something played faster than geriatric speed. +8 anyone???? Soda fits the bill and goes far beyond any local I have heard with creative track selection....(I have yet to hear Andrew Spence), so does Split Milk and D:Train, in fact the whole 20Hz crew knows how to do it up.......why do you think they get guys like Atomic Hooligan to party with them all the time??? Hard House???? What's that :P Mirka's special section: People who play other things while they spin: Tripwire: Live PA Akeel : that drum machine thing while spinning.......I could never do that I'd need a tylenol.....and ALOT of beer Farshad aka Abasi: for the ability to play the bartending waitress AND records at the same time ;) P.S. Soda, Akeel and Farshad win for the most entertaining DJ's too...they don't look like they are in pain while spinning :D:D:D Last edited by Mirka Cerny; Aug 02, 03 at 12:01 AM. |

My mistake automatic.......... sorry I don't make it out to alot of D&B nights........
My fave D&B DJ internationally is Dara and to be honest I can't really tell the difference between D&B and Jungle. Sorry..... I really am. I need to be educated I suppose, but hell people think I play hard house and I play Techno, trance, and prog...... It's all good. I knid of thought this thread was ridiculous anyways kind of impossible. Someone's feelings are liable to get hurt if they are left out. Let me know when you are playing and I will come and check you out. Peace |

there isn't really a difference.....it's not like they are two distinct genres, it's more like a spectrum, with crisp clean drums, tight rolling basslinges and technoey sounding samples at one end (dnb) and mashed-up amen breaks and dubby basslines and ragga toasting at the other (jungle) most stuff falls somewhere in between, and it's pretty much all just called drum and bass these days.

^ I totally agree/ disagree with the above comment.... yes we have A LOT of wet back breaks DJs in this city, but you can put any of the twentyHz crew on the decks in the same night and you won't hear the same track twice... you'll hear tracks of all breaks tempos and styles, not just the new Finger Lickin' or TCR's that came out that week....plus you'll hear tracks that you've never heard- old/ new/ unreleased dubs etc...... Cookie Cutter breaks DJs are the ones that have been buying breaks for like a year or so and have every Finger Lickin' but not a clue who Dynamo Productions or say Grand Central Records are.... all the twentyHz crew have been playing breaks for over 5 years (at least) and have DEEP crates... with the amount of vinyl we all buy weekly- bloody'ell.... just have to be a DJ to be a DJ.... stop searching on the net for the new hotness and go to your local shops and do some diggin'.... Internets made it too easy for New Jacks now a days....
