its a toss up between orbital and goldie. the first rave track that i remember getting seriously hooked on was goldie's inner city life back in like 97. when i heard that shit i knew that i loved the music. But also around that time i started listening to alot of orbitals so its really justa toss up.
earlier prodigy stuff from before fat of the land had an affect on me as well. |

I use to think electronica was the worse thing anyone could listen to i was all about the punk rock. But then around grade 11 by friends brother and his friends were really into raves and we took an old greg c cd he had. The first track was the launch i thought it was dope, first rave cd i ever liked i couldn't wait to burn it. Then i tried going to a party and have bin going ever since.

i didnt even listen to electronic music before i went to a rave. tho i had been making it for about a year before that! haha but honestly the first local dj that really blew my mind was AZIM and KYLE JOYGAZM. what can i say? trance is great in the morning! there were many more djs at my first party that i just loved but i have no idea who they were. but im told they were mostly breaks and jungle djs. breaks were totally my first love. (i HATED all house when i first started partying!! ack@!) but i loved breaks and jungle. ;)
the first headliner that i saw that just destroyed me was DJ SWAMP!! i had no f-ing idea what he was playing but it was seriously insane. |

Prodigal Sons, by far was the first and biggest. Prophecy of Panic, Virus, MindBender, Chemical brothers, 808state, and the KLF. are big up in music that started me.
Our local DJ Noah, from about 1994 kept me going till 1997 when I started to party. (For those that don't know him he has the longest running electronic music show on the Westcoast.) Other DJ's I give credit and are mentors for my DJ, and promotions, is Tobias, ChrisSchmidt, and Midnight. And it was Eman (now Emmanual Ferreira) Glyn, MikeRock and Clone that got me really6going on my own DJing and Music. Oh yea Props to DJ Lunatech. |

To tell you the truth, the DJ that really got me INTO the music/breaks and heightened my love of the scene was Precise. Up until I had heard him, I wasn't too dedicated to the music, more into the social part of the scene. But yeah, he would be the DJ I'd give credit to in getting me "hooked".
Other than that, DJ Gumbee, Icey, and Sharaz. =) *Jen* |

( that pig emoticon is meaningless.....)
For what its worth, coming from Calgary....whuT? Care to reminisce? Industrial music - 80's hip-hop - reggae - punkrock...my roots DJ RICE - I was a snotty punk rock kid, always loved hip-hop (more so then than now), and started going to hip-hop jams/parties in Calgary in late '80's, early 90's. Large hip-hop jams were direct precursors to raves in Cowtown. RICE was an original Cowtown hip-hop dj, playing all the parties. Then witnessed the man in action spinning deep fuckin' house at clubs like the EMPIRE a few years later. Good times. Definitaly got me interested in dj'-ing 10 years ago. Dj DOUBLE D!!! - anyone from Calgary, pay your respects. 13 years of hardcore, DNA @ CJSW Radio outta UofC, original House of Unity crew, Sublink shindigs, etc. etc. Still bustin headz. Special K - House of Unity mixtapes....probably still have some of em too. Radiant St8 Radio show @ CJSW outta UofC - the 'homebass' of Calgary. HuUUUGe influence. Hated the show when i first heard it, "club music....bahh", but heard my first strains of jungle tekno, and hardcore breakbeat done right. Dj NOAH & HOMEBASS @ CiTR 101.9 FM Like duh... many other dj's doing their thang on Vancouver campus airwaves (represent!) ANDY B - one of the first "rave parties" i went to in Vancouver was called HOLODECK Aug'94 - hardcore, and jungle....Sunday nite at the LUX, not many people, fast music, breakbeats, I fell asleep upstairs in the balcony...Andy B's mixtapes were a religion for me. I still have the flier for this party too. T-BONE - nuff said. UK jungle dj's like RANDALL, LTJ BUKEM, DJ CRYSTAL, etc. Derrick May - all my questions were answered seeing the man live. Like wise STACY PULLEN DAVE CLARK Ritchie Hawtin & John Aquaviva THE STICKMEN!! - big influence for my house fix MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO - for those who know PUBLIC ENEMY/ THE BOMB SQUAD STONE LOVE SOUNDSYSTEM - boooombaaklaaat 808 St8 FNAC Recordings - France and beyond Laurent Garnier, Scan 7, Ludovic Naverre ( now St. Germaine ) BASIC CHANNEL Revolting Cocks oh, and lots of SKINNY PUPPY. ^ Early Prodigy for sure, I believe that "The Experience" CD was one of the first electronic music CDs I ever bought
.... and bootleg Old Skool Hardcore tapes from the UK that were sold at this Toronto shop called X-Statik.... Hype, Grooverider, Food Junkie, Kenny Ken, Carl Cox.... I had so many I wish I still had them. Seeing Dee-Lite perform Live at the first rave I ever went to back in Toronto in 93' was fucking cool as well. As for the first DJ... I would have to say it was a combination of the residents at this old night in Toronto called "Knowledge Fridays" at The Tunnel Club. It was the best way to start the weekend.... upstairs room was Jungle with Slip n Slide, Sniper, and Mystical Influence.... and the downstairs room was Progressive House (a very broad term for everything that wasn't Jungle back in those days), with John E, Danny Henry, and Mark Oliver. I would "RUSH" (hehehe) to Jungle till they closed the room for the last hour, and then I would force myself to dance to the beats being played downstairs. All my older crew of friends were already accustomed to house but I hated it, Jungle was the shit too me... funny though, being to high to care and just wanting to keep moving (damn E was good back then) I started to like what the last hour in the downstairs had to offer... thats when I discovered breaks way back in 94'.... John E...thank you.... -soda Last edited by twentyHz; Aug 24, 03 at 04:16 PM. |
