Kaleidoscope Paul van Dyk has grown to become one of the most respected and loved dance artists in the world. From his humble beginnings trapped on the wrong side of the Berlin Wall prior to it’s collapse, to his position today as an internationally revered figure – three things have remained constant: his love for music, his talent, and his astonishing work-rate. It is this dedication and passion that has led to his phenomenal worldwide success - and what makes him one of the dance scene’s most endearing figures. His singles and albums have enjoyed respective commercial success. His last artist album sat at No. 11 in the album charts for 2 weeks, and his latest single came close to matching his Top 7 success with Sarah Cracknell. With America currently making all the right noises - Paul is the only electronic artist Rolling Stone magazine have tipped this summer - some are predicting his success will mirror that of fellow US label-mate, Moby. A reflection of this is PvD’s starring role in the new worldwide TV & cinema Motorola ad that gives him that kind of massive global exposure. He increasingly attracts avid fanaticism from the press and public alike, but - ever the individual - van Dyk remains an enigmatic figure who shuns the siren-like call of celebrity. PvD prefers instead to captivate his fans through his music, the level of which can be gauged at any of his regular 10,000 capacity gigs and by the fact that the media refer to him simply as “God”. Paul van Dyk’s musical experimentation - expressed through collaborations with groups like St Etienne, Vega 4 and Second Sun, and vocalists like Jan Johnston – has reached another level with this, his fourth artist album. ‘Reflections’ is van Dyk at his most accomplished. Amongst the signature PvD anthems such as ‘Nothing But You’ (which recently reached No. 14) ‘Connected’ and ‘Spellbound’, are stunning songs such as ‘Time Of Our Lives’ (written and recorded with hot British rock band Vega 4), ‘Home’ (with Jan Johnston), and ‘That’s Life’ – which features Paul on vocals for the first time. These tracks show his love for a variety of genres - The Smiths and New Order are among his favourite bands – and highlight Paul’s strength as a songwriter. In addition, he’s harked back to the breakbeats that he pioneered with BT in the mid 1990’s for ‘Never Forget’; joined forces with Germany’s biggest hip hop star, DJ Tomekk, for ‘Knowledge’; and produced a beautiful, electronic epic with Second Sun in ‘Crush’. This album is a striking piece of work that transcends the dance genre and shows Paul is on the cusp of the worldwide success he so richly deserves. Paul van Dyk has surely come a long way since his techno beginnings - but ‘Reflections’ shows he’ll go further than anyone could have predicted.
