We're talking a power amp though. Maybe we're calling it the wrong thing, but all we want is something solely for power. No tuner, sound modes or any other stuff. Just pure testicles. Main reason is because it needs to be 2-4 ohms and I think most receivers are 6-8.

I'm assuming you mean you picked up two PA speakers, not PAs (PA stands for 'power amplifier' yo!) - and I wouldn't suggest using any car audio for it - NOT THE SAME THING!! First of all you have the 120V vs. 12V problem, amongst others - chances are if you really don't know what you're doing you'll blow something up. As well, you mean 2-4 ohm stable right? Just depends on the PA, pretty much every PA speaker is 8 ohms, so you'll only need a PA that is 4 ohm stable for 2 speakers (2 ohm stable for 4 speakers, etc.) - but on that note, try long & mcquade, they often have used yorkville mixers/PAs in a box that work well, have every type of input (XLR, 1/4 inch and RCA) over 8 channels, seperate line outs and speaker outs and often seperate monitor outs as well - might be more expensive then you're looking for though but I'm sure you could get one for $400.

kick the pa yo.
my only word of advice is this: you may think buying an old amp from a pawn shop is a bad idea. you may also be wrong. new amps - especially those "amps" that are really sad little recievers - overheat. i'm not much of an electrician so i can't tell you why they get so much hotter, but i'll be damned if old 70's amps don't survive parties better. if you can find an Akai amp, let me know. i'll kill you and steal it, then stroke it covetously. |

Yeah that's me over at the bpm forum.
I have a friend who has a Bryston amp www.bryston.ca - it's a small unit but VERY heavy, probably used in a club or for rock concerts way back (he wants to keep it :kam: ). Not sure where he got it, might have been a garage sale. It doesn't have any controls so you need to use something else to set the volume. |
