It's the third in a series of continuous mixes by Big League Chu and Dave Saddler. Lucky is a relative term isn’t it? So is hype, as is quality. So let me put it this way: I feel lucky to have an advance copy of “Breaking the Sound Barrier” in my hands, I’ll stake my hard earned reputation on hyping it, and it’s quality will back it up. By now you know what to expect. Like a pair of master butchers at a gourmet meat shop the boys have selected some mouthwatering morsels for you listening pleasure. All the bombs from a particularly bountiful (and decadent) summer are here. Perhaps the most appropriate description of the CD is that it flows very much like a condensed version one of their live DJ sets. Playing back to back for so long has honed their skills to the point where they can finally render that “live” experience to CD. There’s an irresistible groove that infuses the entire mix, a unifying thread that holds the whole thing together high-lighting subtle commonalities in each track. The mixing is deceptively simple made possible by their extraordinary attention to detail. Track selection, always, is a matter of preference but here too the lads did their homework. It’s difficult to please the ‘heads who demand freshness, broaden the horizons of the recently converted, while preaching to “Breakbeat heathen” at the same time. The evidence here says they’ve managed to navigate those tricky water with aplomb. Truly what a glorious summer it has been. Can it be that they dropped not 1, not 2, but 3 seminal tracks on an unsuspecting T dot Breakbeat massive. On their last Selection they gave us The Anthem of the year “We Want Your Soul”. On this one It’s the “Lumidee” & “Tom’s Diner” Bootlegs that take centre stage. I’ll leave you with this advice. If you’re fortunate enough to get a copy, guard it like a Bedouin chief’s daughter guards her virginity. : enjoy... |
