The idiocy of micro-genre-ing.
*Kind of brought up by yet another debate of what the difference in jungle and D'n'B is. From Muzik.*
Just how bad is it? Allow me to introduce to you the micro genres of UK Garage! Underground: Well that's where it's made, innit? As Slimzee says, "I don't care what you call it, this shit's underground, it's street music." Key track: Wizzbit featuring Riko - Popadoms Forward: Named after the monthly east London night Forward, which reflects the dubby, breakbeat end of the UK Garage spectrum. Key track: Oris Jay - Said The Spider Sublow: Championed by the likes of DJ Martin 'Liberty' Larner and Black Ops, this micro genre defines itself through its heavily drum & bass influenced, grimey rollers. Garage for Guardian readers, the unkind might say, which is probably why no one urban will give it the time of day. Key track: Jon E Cash - War Grime: The mucky strain of UKG that needs a good going over with a bit of Mr. Muscle by that chap who used to be in Brush Strokes, Pirates and the darker floors are all over this. Key track: Wiley - Igloo Tech Garage/UK bass: Similar to the Forward sound, but injected with about a billion influences from Detroit house and childish booty bass. More Hoxton than Hackney - can't see Pay As You Go branching out into it any time soon. Key track: Debaser - You're Wrong Urban House: Anything that doesn't fit into any of the above, reckons celebrity golfer Spoony and his Dream Team pals. Urban music that can be played on the radio on a Sunday lunchtime without offending too many people. Key tracks: Qualifide - Dubs Volume 4 Still can't quite find the proper micro genre for that one track? No problem. Here is a simple UKG Name Generator to help you out. Simply choose a word from each column! 1. Dark ------ Future ------- 2 Step ------ Garage 2. Urban ---- Dirty ---------- Speed ------- Bass 3. Real ------ UK ------------- Forward ----- Breaks 4. Grimey --- Und'rgr'nd --- Sublow ------- Dub 5. East ------ Side ---------- Street -------- Tech |

seems idiotic to the outsider.... but considering that the scene surrounding each of those 'microgenres' in london alone is probably larger than any of vancouver's various club scenes, there's gotta be some way to distinguish one from the other
a lot of people around these parts would find it amusing that what they call 'techno' or 'rave' music is broken up into several sub genres ie trance, house, breaks, dnb |

Of course, as with many Muzik articles, it's meant to be taken in jest. Still, as it seems with all music, a micro-genre tends to be created when a track is made and the producer, afraid of it being lumped into an existing micro-genre, tends to call it something else. Most of those UKG micro-genres listed maybe have a handful of actual tracks under their banners. Hence, why they included the Name Generator for anything new that would arise.
The truly silly thing about it is that you can take that Name Generator, replace a couple of the words, and it would fit in with almost anything else. Trance, for instance. Replace 'Grimey' with 'Epic' and you might come up with Epic UK 2-Step Tech trance instead of Grimey UK 2-Step Tech garage. The reason why they went with UK Garage is because the music really isn't that much different song from song. The fact that people have already began splitting UKG into mircro-genres just goes to show how silly the whole premise of mircro-genre-ing a style of music has become. |

Forward:
Named after the monthly east London night Forward, which reflects the dubby, breakbeat end of the UK Garage spectrum. Key track: Oris Jay - Said The Spider Grime: The mucky strain of UKG that needs a good going over with a bit of Mr. Key track: Debaser - You're Wrong Atleast Muzik (who reads this magazine anyway??) has the taste enough to reference a BOMB tune from the one ORIS JAY - aka. Darqwan - "Said The SPider" Ram jam tune! Speaking of which, FORWARD is a club, but for some eason there's no mention of TEMPA recs, and all the labels affiliated GHOST, SOUL JA, etc. PUre dubstep garage, etc. Where as ORIS JAY, puts out the nastiest, darkest trax around - which is "grimey" to say the least. And speaking which, you often find all these 3 ^^ quoted sub-genres of garage beats simultaneously on most TEXTURE Records 12"s - also headed by ORIS JAY. TEXTURE Recs rocks! :PartEkid: Last edited by **TORMENT**; Dec 03, 03 at 09:27 AM. |

Oris Jay is like a messiah! Haha. I'm soooo down with his shiz. When Groovetech was still running, Matin Clarke and Paul Fraser, and the one KODE 9 all had shows, ever check em out? - the dubplate.net Show, and Hyperdub Show. Oris Jay guested and ... WHOAH! It was just when i started getting into TEMPA stuff, and this Oris Jay comes on and.... honestly some of the best music i've heard in my life perod! Really ruff chunes, delivered and slamming harder than most dark dnb!! , and slipping in old British techno like LFO, etc., and ghetto house trax - totally insinc (sp?) with what he does with TEXTURE Recs. Oris Jay is a veteran dj innit? He's been around forever in the UK.
I buy every Texture 12" on site. Bad mon, him. Most people would say Texture sounds are techno influenced, but i don't distinguish em. THEY ARE TECHNO!! I played a full on breakz/dnb nite in Cowtown this summer, and i was hitting em off with Texture, TEMPA, and dark breakstep, etc. Yeah, it was pretty "dark" and minimal compared to the breakz the other dj's were playing - you noticed right away! It was fun. PETE WILDE is a garage/breakz dj from Calgary. Bad mon! Good stuff. They seemed to be really into the sound there at breakz nites and on campus radio shows. If anyone hasn't yet, check www.garagepressure.com for Darqwan sets, amongst others. Also links to the GOOD garage sounds about. Last edited by **TORMENT**; Dec 04, 03 at 05:45 AM. |
