How do YOU hear music?
Just wondering.
I listen for complexity and flow. Do the words sound good and do they make sense? Is the artist trying to say something? Does the music bring up an emotion? How willl this song sound LOUDER or quieter? will it be a classic? or is it a classic remade? My buddy Grant listens to the music in beats. like, he counts the beats (cuz he's a dancer) and the words come second to him. I know a lot of people who just want the music and couldn't care about the words. or they'll just learn the chorus. i dunno. everyone's different right? trance / country / jazz / rnb / hip hop / etc. It's all music, and as time goes by, you can see how it all sorta crosses. there are only so many topics to talk about, but how does music stand out to YOU? |

well when i listen to a track, whether its electronic or rock/punk/metal or hip hop... I always seperate all the sounds into seperate channels in my head. then compile all the sounds together again and see how they work together, if there is good harmony, and how the sounds are layed out and mixed in. I also look for what emotions the song conjures up for the listener. the meaning of the lyrics, what msg it is conveying is really important to me for that type of music. For DNB, the flow and creativity is really important, along with how the bassline is layed out and how the breaks are programmed and layered ontop of each other. a Good sample that goes with the track and how it is used and chopped up is also important..

i listen to the song
if it appeals... i get technical liek if you listen carefully ull realize all the good songs...have noises or other background melodies that complete the track in whole...imagine taking that certain thing out..will it sound the same?? you wont pick up unless you carefully listen (subconciously youll pick it up) and over time i hear these...and this is what makes the songs good and have this certain sound to em... im a bass freak...so if its hard im compelled to listen some more and if i keep on liking it ill get the track and listen to it...learn it and whatever else you can do with a song |

hmmmm
well the way i listen to music has always been progressing....i used to listen for really good vocals and the richness in sound a really good voice can bring, then a really good mc and how they use their voice and lyrics to make a rhyme bring out so much attitude, funk, anger, love.. pretty much everything single emotion out there... can't say the content of a song has always been my number 1 concern but i usually pay more attention when the flow or the richness in voice forces me to listen carefully to the words. eventually i got more into the beats with poppin and lockin back in the day... big pumpin basslines, funky sexy beats to really hard complex rollin ones... then as i got deeper into dancing i couldnt help but pay more attention to the programming of the beats and how some producers n djs just knew what to do to get my ass moving like crazy... the feel and emotion n attitude just stands out andthings just make more sense. and the anticipation was mixed with teases and breakdowns with drops that just hits the spot and makes your night. nowadays i listen for everything... now that i have the luxury of being able to compile music n test it out on others who are willing to listen i guess i listen for being in unity with myself and my listeners i also like music that i can listen to (if its a dj set or a concert) from beginning to end and not be bored 1 second of it. kinda werid because myself I'm Deaf.. well I can hear a little but not very good.. it has to be like a loud noise.. and for musics.. I usually " feel" the beats not hear it.. unless I'm standing next to the stereo! A lot of hearing people find it really amazing that I dont hear it but I feel the beats and I dance to the beats by feeling them but I dont think I dance perfectly to the beats though! :PartEkid: But at least I'm having fun when I dance! |

i always catch the beat and the rythem first. sometimes i dont even bother with the lyrics. depends on what kind of music it is though. i dont listen to rap really but if its on i focus on the actual music and i ignore the mindless lyrics all together.

That's crazy. I guess i forgot to mention: yeah, i listen for the bass. deep and heavy. gotta be sorta funky or original. MMMM FUNK! BAM BAM BAM!
Like, in terms of trance, i really like Andain - Beautiful Things. It's on DJ Tazix's cd and it's fucken GREAT. in terms of slow jams, i really like Tyrese - For Always, and unfortuanely, i have like a grand total of 10 mp3's since a virus made me nuke my last collection. These answers are WAY better than i thought they would turn out! |

I mean everyone can!:) I've had hearing friends telling me that learning sign language is a lot easier than learning some other forgien language! Because sign language is just based on using your hands and facial expression. Sooo, anyone can learn sign lanugage.. Not sure if you know this but babies can learn sign language before they talk its because sign language is a lot more easier to teach em! |

^^ Really? Wow... I didn't know babies could learn to sign although it does make perfect sense as they already express themself in different ways... we just don't understand! Maggie - you have a great attitude about music/dancing... I wish more people shared in that same attitude/energy.
I see you live in Cloverdale... this old man graduated in Cloverdale back in 96! Good post DJ Lawrence... |

Straight up i just listen to it. I dont really pay attention to the lyrics cause i can care less about it if its a hip hop or r&b song. Atleast in recent years cause they just go off about new words they come up with. Fo shizzle, wanksta etc.. Although all hip hop tracks arnt like that it has sure gone down hill since the olden days.

When I listen to music exclusively Techno, I listen to each sound, and listen to that sound constantly throughout the song, than I repeat the song listen to another sound. Doing this until the song comes completely together, than I think of other ways the song can be improved. Maybe by adding vocals, sound effects, melody lines, bass etc... The song has to come together nicely and smoothly like as if the sounds we're ment to be with eachother. Sometimes random songs can sound totally great if the beat changes up completely and mixes back into the original sound that started at the beginning of the song.
For example Chemical Brothers - Loops of Fury Listen to some Goldie that's random Photek (most random DNB/Jungle) |

When I listen to music, weather it be jazz/electronica/emo/classical/punk/indie/blues. I tend to think of a "perfect scene" that would go with that song. In a movie, i get pictures in my head. Like a slow acoustic love song....the guy..the girl..the cheezy moment, you know.
Sometimes ill listen to an instrumental melody and totally go off into my own little "world" so to speak. I still find it insane how different songs affect your mood. When i listen to punk/indie/ or hardcore I usually get flashes of a band just rocking out on a stage...so if there is a crazy guitar riff, im most likley imagining myself playing it, or the band..even though i haven't usually seen them. Music allows me to tune out the world, its the theme music to my life. It affects my art, my acting, my personality and just the way I am. I write lyrics, but rarley ever listen to them over the harmony, unless i find they have meaning to me..Music is like the alternate way to speak to someone. It would be cool to have a conversation with someone with 'just melody'.... It's pretty crazy to think of the power music holds on a lot of people. Music is like my soul, my beliefs and my feelings all mashed into a pile of symphonic insanity. It goes that deep. p.s. Maggie I sign!! It would be awesome to talk to you, lol and you can tell me how much i suck.. Last edited by Rayeine; Feb 11, 04 at 12:50 PM. |
