CBC radio program about Record (Music) stores
Coming on now 930-10 am
690 AM Vancouver, also FM 1010? re the competition from legal and illegal downloads, many stores are expected to close in next 5 years. *********************** OK the program is over now. They said the general-music CD stores (and the music sections of retailers that sell other stuff) will be hit by competition from legal and illegal downloads. But specialty music stores will have a better chance of surviving. They pointed out that small bands or music creators do not make any worthwhile money from music sales until they sell at least 30,000 copies. The CDs (or vinyl I guess) mostly serve to get the artist known so they can make some money from concerts, club appearances, tours. The more progressive artists, who know they will always be small, encourage downloads and instead market their music direct, bypassing the record companies.
