VA, Hyper - Wired, 2xCD
Label: Thrive Records | Release Date: 23 March 2004
After a series of acclaimed mix albums for Y3K and Bedrock, as well as recent remix work for heavy hitters such as Pink, Paul Van Dyk, & Sarah McLachlan, UK breakbeat pioneer Hyper readies himself for the release of the next smashing Hyper mix compilation, Wired. Wired's release comes via a newly inked North American deal with Thrive Records, and will coincide with the young DJ/producer's 50+ date tour in support of the Crystal Method this spring. Twenty-five year old Guy Hatfield is a man with a mission. Heralded as the new breakbeat leader of the pack and the hardest working man in the UK dance scene, Hyper continues to turn heads and push boundaries to great acclaim. His pioneering Y3K compilation albums secured Hyper's name in the dance music world as one to watch and spawned many copycat releases. Hyper went on to surpass expectations with his world-renowned Bedrock Breaks CDs, and can lay claim to the biggest selling breakbeat compilations to date globally. With a new mix compilation set for release via a freshly inked North American deal with Thrive Records (Paul Oakenfold, Sandra Collins, Sander Kleinenberg) and a massive US tour in support of the Crystal Method about to launch, Hyper is primed and ready to solidify his place in America. Although not an artist album, 6 out of the 21 tracks on Wired contain Hyper production work- be they original tracks such as the much buzzed about "Outsider," collaborations such as "Wubbie," which pairs Hyper up with West Coast breakbeat favorite Uberzone, or Hyper remixes, such as the midblowing guitar-laden remix of Moguai's "Get On." The sequencing and mixing of Wired are all spot on, which is to be expected from a DJ who is widely acknowledged as one of the best technical DJ's in dance music. Hyper effortlessly melds tougher, MC-laden material (General Midi "Entertainer") with driving, progressive inspired numbers (Junkie XL's remix of Infusion "Legacy"), all the while not overlooking the funky low end bass breaks heads have come to love. On the live front, Hyper's unique, genre crossing DJ sets have earned him the respect of fellow pioneers, Paul Oakenfold, John Digweed, Timo Maas and BT (who lists Hyper as one of his favorite DJs). Through shear hard work, over the last few years Guy has also achieved one of his main goals of taking breakbeat from a backroom stalwart to a main room attraction blowing away many higher profile (and higher paid) jocks who commit to a more limited sound. Hyper is regularly asked to guest mix on the UK's largest radio outlet BBC Radio 1 for DJ's Annie Nightingale, Seb Fontaine and Fergie. Hyper also frequently tours Stateside where he is considered as one of the scene's leading lights. He is a popular and frequent guest at the US' largest clubs, such as Spundae, Avalon and Buzz. This raised profile has lead to Hyper being chosen as the support DJ for breakbeat's biggest band, The Crystal Method on their nationwide tour this spring. In the studio Guy has been writing his much anticipated debut artist album. Recent releases on Timo Maas' label 4:20 Recordings have proven a successful teaser of what's to come. Guy's production style contains the strong elements and main room crossover one has come to expect from his dance floor filling remixes. He has built on the notoriety of his mix (now a breakbeat anthem) of 2001's biggest track 'Addicted To Bass', by remixing other charting acts such as Filter and Joy Kitikonti. Hyper's popular remix of Terminalhead was also chosen for a Radio 1 TV ad campaign. Recently Guy has also collaborated with some of his favorite producers General Midi, Uberzone, Rui Da Silva and John Ross (one time production partner of both Sasha and BT), and the results are groundbreaking. Some genuinely great club remixes and productions have naturally attracted the attention of major labels and artist seeking to find a credible remixer. Hyper has remixed Pink's "Trouble" to such a high standard that Pink herself has asked the he be used to remix all of her future singles. Listen out for Hyper's forthcoming remix of 'God Is a DJ', as well as remixes for the, Sarah McLachlan, Paul Van Dyk and UK chart toppers the Sugababes. Hyper's new business venture is his Kilowatt label. Terminalhead, Stir Fry, Flatliners, General Midi and False Prophet are the first signings and early releases are big news inside and outside the scene. His promotion company Waxworks is still the biggest in breaks after 6 years, and Guy is also DJ Magazine's specialist breakbeat reviewer. With all this activity, Hyper is making a permanent mark on speaker boxes from coast to coast. Expect much more from him in the coming months, and expect your expectations to be surpassed… "Thankfully, for every head up his arse ponce there's a Hyper- capable of making music and compilations that are exciting, fresh and accessible!"
