Dancehall...
I'm looking to update my CD collection soon... I'd like to expand my music collection to incorporate Dancehall. Anyone know of any "must-have" dancehall CD's that are good from start to finish?
Old stuff, new stuff... it doesn't matter so long as it's quality! Thanks in advance! -TiFF- |

Vinroc has a CD out on the Triple Threat label, probably not the easiest one to find. buy on sight if you find it, it's pretty much the essential primer for anyone interested in dancehall (actual jamaican dancehall that is). i think it's called 'dancehall flavours' or something... sick mix, upwards of 45 tracks on one cd (!)
another good, although unmixed, comp is 'Nice Up The Dance', released last year on Soul Jazz. available on double vinyl or CD, it includes some essential dancehall classics (Dawn Penn 'No No No', Cutty Ranks 'Who Seh Mi Dun', Tenor Saw 'Ring The Alarm'), some hip hop/reggae fusion (Kenny Dope ft Shaggy 'Gunshot', J-Live 'Satisfied') and some more current hits (Sean Paul 'Infiltrate', Ms. Thing 'Get That Money'). i highly reccommend this one for DJs and listeners, usually in stock @ Boomtown in both formats. "Torment's a big fan of catchy phrases like that one, but in this case it's so rediculously off base that i'm gonna hafta call him on it. please take the time to check out some authentic dancehall before you peep the stuff made by suburban white kids. please. there's good and bad in both areas but i'm a firm believer in knowing the roots of your music."....
THE BUG... Kevin Martin??? Suburban white kid??? :finger: :284: ( 1000 industrial fans have now just been offended.. look out!! haha. ) He may be white but hardly suburban. If anyone has slept: THE BUG!! Get on it. Martin's roots were in UK industrial extremes/metal/punk, GOD, TECHNO ANIMAL.... fans of Godflesh related experiments rejoice! Uh... The man also responsible for the Marco Dub Infection comps back in the day. He's been working with riddim for awhile, more "African Headcharge" than Sean Paul, more "On U Sound" than.... Baby Blue Sound Crew. Get me? SOOOOOO WRONG . Hmm.. Anyhoo... "PRESSURE" is breaking new territory in dancehall for real. Collaborations with vocalists such as Daddy Freddy, Wayne Lonesome, Rootsman, dub poets Roger Robinson & Paul Sinclair and a variety of side projects/labels/remixes to boot. From dancehall, dub, dark riddim rides, and 'more (breakcore!!). Check it out. Oh, and having played back to back with the more hardcore dancehall radioshow selectors in town... THE BUG brings it on. Even THEY recognize. Recommended. (I listen to more soundsystem/soundclash recordings than anything else. Sound systems like FIRE LINKS!! MatterHorn!! David Radigan, KillaMon Jaro. CaveMan, etc. ) BOH! Last edited by **TORMENT**; Mar 20, 04 at 04:42 PM. |

yeah, yeah, i know who kevin martin is... i'm interested to check the bug stuff, even though i think techno animal is utter garbage. my point is, someone who wants to get into dancehall wouldn't be well advised to start with this guy's work imo. start with the real shit. work your way out from there. otherwise you have no frame of reference for his divergences from the traditional sound.
plus i just thought it was ironic that you used the phrase 'that's all you need to know' when there is obviously so, so, so, so, so much more to be learned about dancehall (and jamaican music in general) and it's influence on today's dance & electronic music. oh yeah, and if i can offend 1000 industrial fans with one comment, then my day's work is done. now i go back to bed. :smoke1: |

well as far as i could tell, this was a post asking about DANCEHALL MUSIC, if she's asked about industrial dub i would've reccommended On U Sound as well, being that i'm a huge fan your ability to miss people's point entirely never fails to astound me :p |

not sure it's breaking that much new territory, but definitely some rude beats, good choice of vocalists too, definitely worth a listen or five :smoke1: *ed: on further listening, i found that it kind of descended into wank after the first couple of tunes, which were real scorchers. love to have those 2 on wax... plus 'run the place red' is a dope tune (duh, my cat could make a dope tune with Daddy Freddy on vocals) but mixed in too much of an 'aphex twin' style for my liking... lord knows most sound systems will provide enough distortion on their own, without including it in the mix.... can't stress enough how sick that mix is.... my copy is MIA ( :soak: ) but if i find it i'll throw it up on winstons ftp for all to hear. Quote:
that tune ties with Patra's Grace Jones cover ("pull up to the bumper") for all-time dancehall fromage Last edited by Wood; Mar 21, 04 at 06:46 AM. |

"Old stuff, new stuff... it doesn't matter so long as it's quality!
Thanks in advance!" ^^ THE BUG "Pressure" release fits that bill, ya think? NEW sounds, bubbling as we speak. Happening NOW?? Merely expounding on the point, mate. Scratch that surface, there's loooads more to check out. Martin's Bug project is a very prominent example of recent "underground' dancehall mutations, but the album is only the beginning of the sound. I recommend it for anyone interested, its easily available. From there, look out for dancehall mutations and artists on international labels like CLASH RECORDS, Razor X, SHOCK OUT, Full Watts, Rewind, artists like ENDUSER (Sonic Terror Records), Rup/ture, .... If you're interested, its out there. Next level?? You know what's in my crate! :smoke1: Last edited by **TORMENT**; Mar 21, 04 at 07:35 AM. |
