Music Progression for You

Does everyone goes throught transitions with their fave type of music? For instance, I got into parties because of Hard House, but I've since fallen in love with Trance. Am I alone in this one? What did you start with? How and why has that changed?

For me, it went like this:
Hard House: 2 years - after seeing the 12'' thumpers @ Gimme a Break
Breaks: 6 months - Cause I liked the way people danced to it
D&B: 1 month - I was doing a lot of drugs then
Progressive: 2 years - Sasha and Diggers @ the Cave
Trance: 1 year - Tiesto
Epic: till now. - Cause its hard to mix right

grew up surrounded with classical music, old eric clapton, michael jackson, bon jovi, simon and garfunkel.... pretty much whatever my parents and older sister fed me.

got really into offspring, aerosmith, ugly kid joe, live, and green day for a while. really dug rnb for a while... like boyz 2 men and all4one.

then came to canada and got exposed to hip hop and i've been constantly feeling and following it till today

my electronic dance progression started off with trance for a while mixed with progressive house... just simply euphoric music
blended into the need for some harder faster beats started getting into harder trance and timo maas mauro picotto style pumpin stuff
started to appreciate drum n bass more and was all over the mc's and djs just running shit all night
started to appreciate the funky house more and decided to start trying out mixing. learned alot with house
moved into spinning some trance and found it pretty challenging in terms of setting the mood right but kept working on it for a while.... during that time i was also listening to alot of drum n bass but had no idea how to mix it due to its complexities.... but ended up giving it a go.... and ended up really getting into the mood of dnb alot easier than trance n house... and felt like i had found my sound with dnb.
kept on mixing dnb while occationally going back to trance and house and even tried making mixes incorporating all the genres and sounds i was feeling
after 2 1/2 years of mixing on the computer, i finally felt i was overdue to get some turntables. got em, got the beatmatching part pretty fast and started recording mixes right away and spending pretty much all my money and assets on vinyl for another 2 years on dnb records.
so now i've got hundreds (maybe well into the 1000's) of dnb records. but i havent been able to touch my trance and house roots much on the decks.

always been keeping up with my hip hop n rnb and have been playing em at club parties and having a blast every time. for the future, i wanna get back into doing the trance and progressive thing with techno, breaks and house all over the place... either invest in final scratch or new cd decks... who knows =) but i still feel like i've got a whole new league to push myself to reach my utmost potential

uh. how?

ISO 713570 states that the maximum requirement for mixing epic trance is 16 bars. that's not really that hard.

I wouldn't call it progression but more like additional tastes in music.

The styles and songs that I grew up with will always be there but as I explored the musical landscape more, I found much more to enjoy just as much.

Now, I go through various phases when sampling from my collection (currently am on a bit of a early 90's Euro House kick) but everything does get regular rotation.

If you suddenly decide that what you were listening to was crap in favor for something else, then you obviously weren't in it for the music.

Oh, for sure. I got into electronic music through Orbital, then a few compilations with folks like Goldie and the Chemical Brothers on them... then that track "In My Mind" from Antiloop...

I was lucky enough to work with a techno radio station out of Calgary - had techno basically spoonfed to me. Blissfully unaware of *what* I was listening too, and very very very talented DJs spinning what I guess could only be classified as "IDM" 24/7.

Then it was hard trance for dancing, then acid techno, then jungle/D&B, then HARD DRIVING TECHNO for a long time. Now I'm starting to get a little tired of straight-up techno, and have been listening to a *lot* of classic acid again. Liberator-stylee, D.A.V.E. the Drummer, Lawrie Immersion, etc - had a bad time yesterday, when I discovered that my new absolute favourite producer, "Secret Hero", is actually a pseudonym of D.A.V.E. the Drummer. :(

For me, my progression as a DJ goes like this:

breaks ('95-'98) - b/c of artists/Djs like Simply Jeff, Scott Henry, Icey, Friction and Spice, DJ Dan (when he played breaks), Uberzone, Chemicla Brothers, etc

progressive house/trance ('97-'98) b/c of Sasha, Andy Hughes, John Digweed, PVD, Oakey, BT and lots of drugs

drum and bass ('98 - '02) b/c of Rob Playford, LTJ Bukem, Ed Rush, Blame, Dara, Nicky Blackmarket, Ray Keith, Mastervibe, Twisted Anger, Mindmachine, Baron, Dylan, Loxy, Dillinja, Bad Company, Digital, B Key. Damage, Representz, Zinc, etc

ragga-jungle ('02-present) - always loved this style, but until recently (last few years) it was very difficult to find ragga records outside of europe.
most influenced by: Remarc, Soundmurderer, General Malice, R.A.W. (best jungle Dj on the planet), Machete, Tester, N2O entertainment, ODG, Lion Man, Bounty Killer, Preecha, Don Daka, Debaser, Shy FX, DJ Monk, Dj Gunshot, etc

I think the #1 factor for me changing styles, was boredom. I'm always searching for a sound/style that can take you in a number of different directions. Plus, I'm a very impatient Dj, who hates to let tracks ride. As I got better as a DJ, I found myself wanting to go through tracks more quickly, so progressing to a faster BPM style fits. I also like tracks with crazy drum programming and tempo changes, so DnB/ragga is a natural choice.

house & trance for like 6 or 7 months...

then i discovered breaks specificaly florida breaks 'cause they were pretty hype at the time. this phase only lasted a few years... istill love breaks, but i'm not into it as much.

i've been loving d'n'b for the last 5 years now, but have only been spining it for two. it's my calling.

now i'm moving into the ragga steez-- slowly. i've been listening to a lot of choons provided by the dj angst (above)

jungle & drum & bass is my calling now. i dont think i could get bored with it. it has more to do with the music. it has to do with the junglist culture & the people within it the make the most rewarding part about it. seen.

94-99- Trance (bbe, future breeze, dumonde, da hool, tiesto, oakenfold, van dyk)
01-02- Death metal (chimaira, cradle of filth, etc.)
02-Present - Trance. (too many to name)

I'm a trance-o-holic. You wont be with me listening to anything else other than. I live for it, and there is barely a moment I'm not listening to it (unless i'm at work)
