look for some studio reference monitors
Tannoy seems to be a popular choice by many producers out there. Very accurate and very clear with a good range of high and low end... over a grand together if thats how much you're looking at paying I'm getting some yorkville ysmp studio reference monitors. sound and quality wise pretty much identical to the tannoys but considerably cheaper. i'm using them for just listening to tunes and dj monitoring but i'm sure theyre good for the studio since they were designed for it. |

Look hard at the Behringer "Truth" series - I've heard some very, very nice reviews, given the price. I also heard the ones from M-Audio don't suck as much as you'd assume. For used, Alesis M1's are good, as are Tannoy Reveals - even the Yorkville studio monitors are ok. You'll eventually need a sub for any of those tho.
Don't skimp on monitoring - your monitors are the only part of your studio that you actually hear. All speakers and soundsystems sound different from each other, and the only way to know that your mix is going to sound good on any soundsystem is to work with a pair of proper monitor speakers that you've spent a lot of time listening to. Lots of newer producers are amazed at how much more "pro" their music sounds after they get a decent set of monitors. Make sure you don't get "passive" monitors! "Active" monitors have the amplifiers built right into the speakers - they're a LOT more money, but worth every cent - passive monitors are designed to function with a wide range of amplifiers, and that means that the specifications you read for them are only approximate. With active monitors, you know that the speaker and the amplifier have been carefully paired together by people who know exactly what's up. :) |

I'd recommend a pair of active Genelec monitors if u got a grand+ to spend..
The alesis and beringer truths are more budget monitors, but i've heard mixed reviews over the quality of the truth's... goto www.futureproducers.com goto the forums and do a search for "monitors" or "studio monitors" ... soooo many threads where people discuss the quality/pricing of various monitors... |

i've heard good things about those mackies..and i haven't totally researched the genelecs,, i know they are really expensive..i was just going with what my teacher told me once, for a certain type of genelecs he said he could get them for me for around 1500-1800, can't remember what model number they were though

I just went googling, and found that there are in fact certain models of Genelec monitors that go for as low as $1050 USD per pair. I have no specs at all on them though. :) The 1031A's are the famous pair, the ones that all the really big studios have when they say "Oh, we have Genelecs"... and those are definitely $3500 USD/pair. |

i'm using the yorkville ysm1p's. they're actually based on the tannoy reveals i believe and they have great sound...but i do need to add a sub! just not enough low end for me.
ryantron, if you havent bought your monitors yet send me a pm - i can hook you up pretty cheap for whatever line you end up wanting. |

Logitech z560's They're 5.1 I use them for creating mixes, tracks, playing video games, watching tv. They're about $81.00 at NCIX or Atic (they do price match) |
