Hernan Cattaneo (progressive house)
From: Argentina
Style: Progressive House You may already have heard of Hernan Cattaneo as Paul Oakenfold's most recent signing, the Argentinean DJ who has been playing with Oakenfold the world over, and as the latest to release a mix-CD on Oakenfold's world-renowned Perfecto label. Or maybe you've heard one of his deep progressive house tracks with twisted tribal beats. If this is your first introduction, be sure to remember the name, as Hernan could be described as the most prestigious Latin American DJ and you will be seeing a lot more of him. In South America Hernan has carried out the single most important role a DJ can possibly fill--spreading the good gospel of dance and inspiration. Growing up in Buenos Aires, he listened to Europop bands like Simply Red and Level 42, music he found sifting through Billboard magazine (the only music magazine he could get at the time). But in 1987, a friend visited Vinylmania in New York City, and brought back a sweet taste of Chicago house in the form of Trax and DJ International pressings, artists like Frankie Knuckles, Derrick May and Inner City. "They blew my mind," exclaims Hernan. "I loved them because they combined the energy of the Europe's electronic music, like Depeche Mode and New Order, with the soul of American music. After that, everything changed for me." Shortly after, Hernan scored a residency in a small club in Buenos Aires which led to him being invited to play in clubs throughout South America. In '91, a trip to the UK opened up a world of possibilities. His talent was recognised and forthwith he became a resident at Clubland at Pacha in Buenos Aires, and it was here he got a chance to share the booth with, and warm up dancefloors for world-traveled DJs like Sasha, John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia, Carl Cox, Darren Emersonā¹and of course Paul Oakenfold. It is because of Hernan's residence that Clubland is recognised as one of the best club nights in the world. On hearing Hernan's eclectic deep house, tribal and progressive set Cream immediately chose him as resident for Cream in South America. He then went on to win Best DJ Award in 1996 and 1997. Then in 1997 Paul Oakenfold invited Hernan to tour Europe with him. It was from this point on that universities and clubs throughout England and Europe began to hear the sounds of Hernan Cattaneo which led to his Perfecto signing. Hernan's radio show "Resident" on Metrodance FM Buenos Aires has the largest listenership of its kind and is heard all over South America on the internet In '98 and '99, Hernan toured the States with Oakenfold, a tour that brought him to many high profile events including Nevada's Burning Man festival and the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Denver. Soon residencies followed at Cream in Liverpool and Ibiza, Perfecto in Ibiza, and gigs at all the big European festivals, as well as dancefloors from Iceland to Singapore. The summer of 2001 saw Hernan playing at Channel 4's event at Clapham Common playing to a stunning 70,000 screaming fans. Other outstanding performances by Hernan include the Bedrock anniversary in October 2001, the last 3 years Creamfields events and Cream anniversaries in Liverpool, headlining Creamfields in Buenos Aires and Homelands 2001.By the end of last year, with his club hit "Deep Funk" blowing up the charts, Hernan made # 50 on the DJ chart, and the cover of DJ magazine. September 2001 also saw Hernan winning the 'Best Newcomer DJ' at the Pacha Ibiza awards. During the summer of 2002 Hernan Cattaneo will be playing throughout the UK at Homelands, The End, Renaissance, Shindig, Bedrock, Cream, The Gallery, Back to Basics, Creamfields; and touring across Europe - Germany, Greece, Spain, Hungary, Czech Republic, Turkey, Portugal, Belgium and of course in Ibiza at We Love Sundays @ Space, Renaissance @ Amnesia and Perfecto @ Pacha. www.hernancattaneo.com |
