backstock records - thumbs up or down?

Are backstock records basically the records (or CDs) that a store has had for a while, and they have not sold? So they classify them as backstock and reduce the price to get them sold?

I'm wondering what the quality of tunes is, in backstock. Presumably they might not contain many big hits, because those records would have sold out quickly when new, and therefore not be sitting around in the store and moved to the backstock section.

I'm interested in this because I notice backstock is sometimes really inexpensive if you buy in those "grab bag" deals of 10 or 20 or more records where you do not know exactly what you will get, and I'm trying to build up the tunes library without too much cashola.

It would be nice to receive some hit tunes even if they were a little old, if you don't already have a big collection. But if the tunes are mostly dull or not-so-hot, maybe not worth even a low price?

If they're anything like the discount CD bins at the mainstream stores, not so good, but sometimes you find a diamond in the rough.

our backstock is generally stuff that has sat on the shelf too long to be considered new. Usually after a few months of going back & forth from the listening stations & being jostled around in the bins, a record's condition will be lessened to the point that it can no longer be sold as a new item, so we slash the price down to 6 bucks (below cost for most items) and throw it in the backstock bin. As you can imagine, it's not the big hit tunes that end up there - but there are always a few goodies that people don't pick up on that end up in the backstock. So it's definitely worth checking out.

now, if you want really cheap backstock, come by for our 5th birthday sale in June. All vinyl currently marked down to $5.99 will be reduced to $1.99!! yay, let's hear it for scraping the bottom of the barrell!! 8)
