Thirst Dj Competition
I'm wondering about the legalities of submitting a mix for that Hieneken Dj comp. I know that the mixes that djs record of dance tunes are technically illegal unless you pay royalties to the artist and need to be registered through SOCAN or ASCAP ect. if you live in the states. Same thing goes for playing out as well, but these laws are generally overlooked in the dance music industry because sales are almost entirely vinyl records sold to djs. However, with a sponsor as big as Hieneken I'm wondering how this would work? Anyone have any thoughts on the issue?

dj mixes are on a PROMO ONLY basis you will win no money in this comp.. just the fame and 10mins with pete tong.
you are required to submit track listings if any of the tracks have a copyright so that the artist get the promo on the web site. |

Shell shocked
They've emailed people selected to go into the eliminations at the clubs. Some people will have been selected from the mp3 mix submissions but will not be able to attend. So there might still be a few spots left in the next day or two.
I got emailed that I was one of the winners from the mp3 competitions but was about to back out because I'm so busy at work. So then this beautiful rep from Heineken shows up at the door looking for me and says I'm supposed to go to a club competition. Who could say no to a 10 from a Heineken van? Plus it's all for fun, should be a blast even if that's as far as it goes. Not sure how I got in. I listened to Akeels and Somas & other mixes and they're great. Maybe they wanted people who have very little experience even if their mix is not so hot. Who knows. |

Sudden thought: they are looking for the worst possible djs for a reality TV show!
I use a computer with Traktor, all I do with the vinyl is rip it to Wav and mp3. Normally use Traktor on my tower PC but I've borrowed a friend's Toshiba laptop until I get my own - kind of a rush job which is not a good idea. I told them about the computer, in case they want only vinyl which I woild understand. Been testing the laptop - have the Echo Indigo DJ - supposedly this is a better card than the Audigy 2 in my tower but it sounds a little harsh. Possibly a configuration problem, or my ears are playing tricks on me. On the other hand it might be my headphones or speakers, 4 total - Paradigm Phantoms and Titans - a little old now at about 12 years. I'm worried the sound is not good enough, maybe I'll see if the guys at Future Shop will let me hook up to their big system in the high-end stereo room for a test. |

I've been bumped out of the competition because of the laptop. They didn't think of a laptop entry as a possibility so that is why it wasn't in the rules I guess. They said they weren't set up for laptops, which is a point, if everyone spins vinyl on the same club system they know they will have good sound quality and no production hassles, while people bringing in computers could be a nightmare if people's systems are not running well. It could be anti-laptop discrimnation though.
They gave me the option of spinning vinyl, but that's something I have no skills in. Guess I should learn it just to get some credibility. Oh, well, at least people liked my mix, and I got to meet and flick my fader for a totally hot babe today mmmmmm (a 9 and I got her picture), and isn't that what DJing's all about??? LOL. BTW my mix was under name Frank Walker, not a perfect mix by any means, in fact some big mixing errors here and there (it ain't easy DJing with a 'puter), but good tune selection. They will be emailing another competitor now that I have dropped out - house division for Au Bar July 3. Good luck to all! What a day! Time for a brew. |
