Headphone cueing

I've been spinning for around a month now and things are going good but alot of the time it seems like the tracks are beatmatched and in sync through the headphones but when i move the crossfader over it starts galloping. I can tell whether the cued track is slow or fast and can usually fix it pretty quickly, but for some reason i cant hear this in the headphones.
Before I go out and spend alot of $$$ on new headphones, I was wondering if you think that the headphones are the problem or if this is just something that takes time to get the hang of.

get headphones that better isolate the sound around your ear (ie. sennheisers) so that you can hear what you're cuing better

if you have a knob like bozga was talking about that goes between cue and master then use that so that you can hear both the cuing record and playing record together in the headphones first

Yeah I do have the mix knob and I use it and they sound in sync but as soon as a fade into the track it gallops like crazy ... I'm using shitty $19.99 numark headphones and I was thinking the lack of bass (the bass drum sounds like someone hitting a piece of wax paper with a pencil) might have somethign to do with it.

20 dollar numark headphones? .. invest in some sennheiser hd280 pro's...i've had em for like 6 months now and i love em.. they suck to ur head, giving awesome isolation... nice sound... i'll usually beatmatch the records one ear, then put the other side of the headphones on, to make sure they are perfectly matched before bringing it in... the hd280s never disappoint for clearly telling the tracks apart...and if they are perfectly beatmatched...start savin ur pennys

Best Solution---> PRACTICE MORE!!!!

i dont think its the headphone problem, yet it would help alot if u get a beter headphone. in the past i even tried beat matching with earphone, but the beatmatching was fine for me, so final ANwer....PRActice, practice practice

I had the same problem when i started too. i think in the beginning i could match them up easily in the headphones but in reality it would only take a few bars for it to go out if left untouched. From the time I removed my phones to the time I opened the channel they would go out a little and not sound perfect.

just work on your beat matching...you've probobly got the basics down but you will need to work on the fine tuning. You'll rarely get it completely perfect but there is a huge difference between keeping two beats matched for 10 seconds and keeping them matched for 45 seconds....just practice, your ears will get really trained really fast.

here is my best advice:

1) cue the record and take your time dont try and mix out before the first breakdown. just listen to your track and be patient.

2) once you think you have it matched bring in your track new track for 16 bars then off for 16. just while your practising. this will develop the habbit of keeping time.

3) practice, practice, practice!

just keep trying and tring, and be patient with it.
and no its not the headphones, its you, but thats okay, takes some people a few months before they can beatmatch.

i don't think its your headphones

i do it like this...
1) make sure the volume of both the master and headphones are at a comfortable level, just enough so you can hear and feel it clearly but not painfully.

2) if you're mixing outta the left turntable, have the right earcup on your ear... vice versa

3) beatmatch and then when you start to slide the fader, keep the eqs low. if you're spinning with trance or house, i suggest you cut out all the bass and leave enough snare on the treble and mid to be able to keep tightening up the tracks

4) depending how you wanna mix, play around with the eqs when you're blending the tracks rather than depending on the crossfader. don't layer too much bass. it'll make the mixing more difficult cuz 99% of the time it'll sound like shit

5) always keep one headphone cup on while you're in the mix. It'll help you hold the mix as tight as possible.

but yeah keep practicing... once you're comfortable with this way of mixing you won't even have to worry about it.

im not sure what you mix off of but if you wanna go pro, turn your lows and mids right down and crank your highs, beat match only off your highs, thats how i do it and I NEVER EVER trainwreck.

also when mixing in bring down the trim on the incoming track and then bring the volume up...when the fader in the middle...then bring the trim up as youre playing with the highs when bringing them in
some people bring in the mids first...its all personal preferance and mixing style...
i find my mixes sound more smooth that way
