Hybrid news, tour dates, and up coming Y4k
the latest from distinctiverecords.com July 5th - I'm still awake single- in all fine record stores Summer 2004 - Hybrid y4k - compillation on distinctive records UK Fall 2004 - Remix and Reproduction vol 2 - on distinctive records UK Hybrid are a trio of remixers/producers/DJs based in the Welsh city of Swansea: Mike Truman, Chris Healings, and Lee Mullin. Meeting while going to clubs in the early '90s, the three made their own remixes of recordings, eventually earning assignments from record companies to pursue their hobby professionally. Finally, they were signed to Distinct'ive Records and embarked on making an ambitious first album, Wide Angle, in Moscow. Hybrid used such talents as singer Julee Cruise and the 90-piece Russian Federal Orchestra. "Finished Symphony," which reached the U.K. singles charts in July 1999, featured the orchestra. It was followed into the charts in September by "If I Survive," featuring Cruise on vocals, and by Wide Angle itself. Picked up for release in the U.S. by Kinetic (distributed by Reprise, a division of major label Warner Records), Wide Angle was reconfigured for its American appearance in September 2000. The group then served as the opening act on Moby's U.S. tour. Remix and Additional Production By... has also been a great success. The infamous Hybrid remix of Future Sound of London - 'Papa New Gineau' is on there, delighting fans, along with remixes of tunes such as Moby - 'Bodyrock' and BT - 'Never Gonna Come Back Down'. Hybrid's new album, Morning Sci-fi (part recorded in Russia and part recorded at their Swansea based studio in Wales), sees collaborations with NYC based DJ/remixer John Creamer, Kirsty Hawkshaw, the legendary Peter Hook (New Order) and The Hermitage String Orchestra, St Petersburg. Peter Hook has co-produced and collaborated exclusively with Hybrid, on the two tracks 'True to Form' and 'Higher than a Skyscraper'. Morning Sci-fi offers a crossbreed of beats, electronic, rock and of course, Hybrid's trademark orchestral sound. "We've been listening to absolutely anything other than dance music. I suppose that is because dance music is so ingrained into what we do naturally. We've been listening to stuff like The Doves, Radiohead, Soulwax, New Order and lots of jangly indie guitar bands and classical music, particularly the work of Arvo Part and Alexander Gretchaninov." Chris Healings Having wowed both Miami Winter Music Conference and Fabriclive, with their new live set up, Hybrid have introduced two unique talents - Adam Taylor (lead vocal and guitar) and Tim Hutton (bass) with original live member Alex Madge (drums). "Pull your head out of your arse, this is phenomenal" Muzik "Emotive and classy, evoking everything from Massive Attack to Vangelis" Time Out "Shiny & sophisticated" FHM "Perfectly pitched between dance floor mayhem and comedown comfort" Mixmag "****" Q Magazine and some info for the gear heads...
