Equipment brands

I've noticed a few topics have shifted towards, what gear is the best.

I don't know all, but I have used a lot of diffrent gear.

Turntables

Technics. The only way to go. Not because they are the best (debatable) but simply cause, any place you go, your going to use tech's. No doubt about it. And it's best to know the gear your using as well as possible. I'm sure gemni's upper models or vestax's upper models are right up there with tech's (I love that little screen somtimes) but it's best to have home turf advantage.

Mixers

Numark seems to beginners as the best way to go. Lottsa features, low price tag.

But, I sometimes doubt the ability for them to last. I've used a few friends which are already starting to go.
Face it, your spending 800 bux on each turn table, it makes sense to throw in a couple extra bux to make that mixer a bit better.

I recomend:

Vestax 170a
Stanton RM-3

These two are basically the same, and have all the features and durability that you'll need.

I would not recomend:
Technics mixers (horrible layout)
gemini mixers (especially the bpm series as well as the ps series)
Numark (heard bad things/didn't like the ones I've used)

Note: I did not recomend anything above the Vestax 170a. For your home needs, you don't need it. Simple. No point in spending 1500 bux for a pioneer 600 for a home system.

Needles?
I don't know enough about the diffrent needles.

Meh, I'm really bored at work.

Agreed

I agree with you on the equipment list but would like to add that the Gemini626 is a fantastic base end three channel mixer.

As for needles - Ortophones are awesome but expensive.

SHURE blues for the beginner DJ - they're pretty cheap and you'll break a pair once in your first while of practice. Dont get these needles if you're going to be a scratchmaster. Get the Stanton 520SKs if that's your flava.

Personally, after owning a numark DM2000 mixer for half a year, I'd prefer not to evem touch any numark gear with a 10 foot pole.
I dunno though.... I did try their red cd decks and they were damn good.... so maybe its just the low end numark stuff that's complete crap.

As for Gemini, I've heard bad things about how long some of their mixers last, but my first mixer was a gemini pmx16, and I gotta say the headphone amp really kicked ass on it. I imagine, if they have a good HP amp on the lowest end of their mixers, then they probably have good ones on their flashier mixers as well.

As for turntables, I could argue forever about how techs aren't the greatest, bla bla bla, but in the end, chris is right. Technics is still kind of the Microsoft of the DJ world.

Kris, I refered to the ps series of gemini as ones to stay away from

EQ is too stiff, and close.

The built in sampler was a big waste of money simply for the fact that it was useless.

Didn't care for the cross fader nor the layout.

So bleh to Gemini

everyone has their likes

my likes

decks: gemini or techs

mixers: Numark, Gem, Pioneer, raine.

my dislikes and reasons:

Vestax decks: too many options not good torque after a little while
Stanton decks: Great looking decks, unfortunetly people dont go to parties to look at decks.

mixers:

Vestax mixers (not all of them) = Ones that have kill switches, you can totally hear the cut and its annoying.

Stanton/next : My mixer blows chunks out of my ass like you've never seen before.

Gemini 626

Strange.. I found the 626 to be a very good mixer, and didnt have a sampler at all.

Perhaps you're thinking of a different model of 626. The one I am thinking of just has three channels and crossfade on 2. No sampler at all..

weird.

Mine was an upgraded version of yours.

It lacked most redeeming qualities.
It was my second gemini mixer.
It sucked. It couldn't perform worth shit, the eq's were more of a pain to use then what is healthy
Didn't like the layout

etc....

Geminis

To each unto their own.

I have a Gemini GS series mixer anyway. Not too great but nice and basic for practice.
